Section 4: Quote Analysis- short paragraph essay (30 points total)

Directions: Use your index card with the author’s quote that you selected from each
of the 2 of the 3 books we’ve read that seems significant or important to you. Next,
explain why the quote is significant to you and why you chose it. In your
explanation, be sure to include details about its CONTEXT: the situation in which it
appeared in the novel. Please use the 5 step quote analysis we practiced last week.
You will discuss, as well as identify where it appeared in the plot of the book. You
must use your QUOTE ANALYSIS 5 step process we used in class.

Uncle Vanya

8
Quote: “I propose to sell it. If we then invest our capital in bonds, it will earn us
four to five per cent, and we should probably have a surplus over of several
thousand roubles, with which we could buy a summer cottage in Finland.”
Speaker: Professor
Explanation: This quote means that if the professor would sell the house he would

get money back. But Uncle Vanya was mad because one day it would be his. This is

important because they had the house for a long time and Uncle Vanya could have

owned the house. The Professor is self-centered and he just wants to sell the house

for cash.

The Underdogs

9
Quote: “Take your choice, General, " said Luis Cervantes, pointing to the
jewels which he had set in a row. "Oh, you keep it all. . . .
Certainly! . . . You know, I don't really care for money at all. I'll tell
you the truth! I'm the happiest man in the world, so long as there's
always something to drink and a nice little wench that catches my eye.”
Speaker: Luis Cervantes
Explanation: This quote means that Luis Cervantes steals more than everyone else
in the rebels. When he joined the rebels he was a medical student in the upper class
and he really didn’t need to steal but as they started stealing he got addicted to
stealing and his behavior became worse and worse. Luis Cervantes isn’t a bad guy
because he left the rebels to go to France when he realized that his stealing problem
was getting worse. People make bad decisions sometimes but it doesn’t mean that
they are bad people because they can change.

One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich
Quote: “When the bones formed a heap and it was the turn of another squad,
someone would sweep them off and they'd be trodden into the nush on the floor. But
it was considered bad manners just to spit fishbones on the floor.”

Speaker: Ivan Denisovich

10
Explanation: This quote means that they had weird rules because they could wear a

hat while in the building but couldn’t spit your bones on the table. This is

important because spitting bones on the floor is more disrespectful than wearing a

hat inside in some cultures. Americans learn that wearing a hat inside is

disrespectful but spitting bones on a table would be disgusting and not appropriate.

Different cultures have different manners from others but it doesn’t one is bad or

better than the other one. It just means we are different.

DEAL DURING THE COURSE OF THE BOOK. USING EVENTS
FROM THE BOOK AND WHAT YOU KNOW ABOUT THE

The characters in Uncle Vanya are not happy with the way
their lives have turned out because all of their experiences
are grim and depressing and they actually feel that nothing
good will happen for them.

Professor Serebrakoff’s experiences are grim because he
thinks about death and dying all of the time. In Act II, page
24 he says, “I am an old dotard, almost a dead man already,
don’t I know it? Of course I see that it is foolish for me, but
wait, I shall soon set you all free. My life cannot drag on
much longer.” The Professor feels like he is not good for
anything because he is old and that he might as well die.

Helena thinks that life is bad and nothing good will
happen for her because the Professor is getting old and will
pass away. She doesn’t know what she will do when he dies.
In Act II, page 18, Helena says, “what shall I do with my
life and my love? What shall become of them? The wonderful
feeling of mine will be wasted and lost as a ray of sunlight is
lost and falls into a dark chasm.” She is saying that her love
life is going to go to waste after the Professor dies. She is
saying that the love that she has for the Professor will go
away as fast as sunlight disappears.

Uncle Vanya is depressed because he spent his whole life
working for the Professor when he could have done more for
himself. He looked up to the Professor but he later realized
that the Professor was not all that he claimed to be. Vanya
feels like his whole life has been wasted. He says, “For
twenty five years I managed this place and I sent you the
return from it like it was the most honest of servants and you
have never given me one single word of thanks for my work,
not one.” He is telling the Professor that he has done
everything that he has asked him to do but he was never
thanked or appreciated.

13
All of the characters in Uncle Vanya are not happy with
their lives and feel like it is not worth it to live because
nothing good will happen for them anyway. Because Russia is a
communist country a lot of people feel like no matter what
you do or how hard you try your life will just stay the same.
The characters in Uncle Vanya show the bad side of life in
Russia and how living in a communist country can make people
feel depressed and sad.
