Question (1) [20 marks]

Circle the only one right answer with giving reasons
Movement along faults in the Earth’s crust Capillary height in a confining aquifer
causes: depends on:
Folds Heatwaves Earthquakes Particle size Soil density None of them

A mixture of fine clay and larger rocks deposited by Folds and thrusts usually form when the
a glacier is known as: Earth’s crust undergoes:
Conglomerate Compression (squashing)
Boulder Clay Tension (stretching)
Mudstone Subsidence (sinking)

Movement of plate tectonics results in: Loess soil can stand vertical due to:
1- rock metamorphism 1- mountain support
2- sedimentary rock 2- wind effects
3- alluvial soil 3- mineral bonding
4- earthquake
In the shown figure (explain)
1. The batholiths is elder than fault A
2. Sill is younger than dike B
3. Dike B is elder than The batholiths
4. Dike A is younger than dike B

Aeolian is: A sheet-like intrusion formed as magma

pushes in between layers of rock is called:
swelling Collapsible soil Metamorphosed a Sill a Dyke a patholith
soils from limestone

Question (3) [12 marks]

a) A sample of saturated clay was initially 23.6 mm thick. Under compression load, the thickness of the
sample was reduced to 21.9 mm. The load was then removed, and the sample allowed to expand and
take up water. The final thickness was 22.9 mm and the final water content was 26.8 %. If the specific
gravity of the particles was 2.69, find the void ratio before and after the loading.
b) - Derive an expression for the bulk density of partially saturated soil in terms of the
specific gravity of the particles Gs, the void ratio , the degree of saturation Sr, and the
density of water .

Question (2) [20 marks]

Question (2) [8 marks]

An epicentre of an E.Q is located at Latitude of 28.80o, and Seismograph s-wave arrival
Longitude of -85.30o.. The table shows the arrival time of s- Latitude time
wave to three Seismograph locations. Assuming p- and s-waves Longitude
travelled through the crust at 8 km / sec and 3 km / sec,
respectively, estimate the time of the arrival of p-wave to the +60.80o -110.40o 23:9:44
given three locations. +40.30o -90. 55o 23:10:10
