Course Description:
GSE Algebra II
This is the third in a sequence of mathematics courses designed to prepare students to enter college at the
calculus level. This course requires students to:

 Understand complex numbers and operations.

 Solve quadratic equations for real and imaginary solutions
 Analyze graphs of polynomial functions of higher degree
 Perform operations on and are rewrite polynomial expressions
 Extend polynomial identities to the complex number system
 Solve systems of equations in two variables
 Explore logarithmic functions as inverses of exponential functions
 Solve a variety of equations and inequalities
 Understand and use geometric sequences and series
 Explore logarithmic functions as inverses of exponential functions
 Understand and utilize the properties of logarithmic and exponential functions
 Use statistics to compare center and spread of 2 or more data sets
 Adapt data to a normal distribution and estimate population percentages
 Understand and make decisions about statistical data collection and design
 Analyze statistical data to form conclusions

Course Outline by unit:

1. Quadratics Revisited 2. Operations with Polynomials
3. Polynomial Functions 4. Rational & Radical Relationships
5. Exponentials & Logarithms 6. Inferences & Conclusions from Data
7. Mathematical Modeling (embedded within the first 6 units)

Materials Needed:
 3-ring binder (either separate binder or divided with tabs if sharing with other subjects)
 Loose leaf notebook paper and pencils (all work must be done in pencil)
 Calculator –TI-36XPRO (app. $15-$20—available through the SHS school store), or TI84 graphing
calculator (anywhere from $90-$150, depending on the version and where purchased)

Grading Policy:
70% Unit Tests 10% Midterm/ Final Exam 15% Classwork/quizzes 5% Homework

The grading scale is consistent with Cobb County policy:

A (90 – 100%) B (80 – 89%) C (74 – 79%) D (70 – 73%) F (69% or below)
Progress reports-- I will print you one any time you would like, but parents and students have access
at all times to current grade/attendance status via the internet through ParentVue or StudentVue
accounts. All students should know their StudentVue login. Parents can receive their own
username/password at Open House on Jan. 24th, or in the front office any school day 8AM-4PM.

Assignment/Homework Policy:
 Homework is always due the next day unless otherwise specified. Late homework (except in the case of
absence) is not accepted.
 Homework will be assigned every day (a few exceptions) as practice of covered material. All work must
be shown to receive full credit. Please always make sure your name and the date on your paper.
Make-up Work:
 All missing assignments due to absence must be completed and turned in before the unit test is given. It
is the student’s responsibility to find out what assignments were missed and to turn them in. Please see
the class blog to get the assignment and the day’s notes whenever you are absent.
 Missed tests are to be made up promptly following an absence. You must make an appointment to come
before or after school or during AO (study hall) to make up any missing tests. Any test that has not
been made up within 3 days of when it was given will be given to the student to make up during
class time (the last resort since this results in lost instructional time).
 Class Rules and Expectations:
1. Be Respectful!
a. Be courteous to all teachers and fellow students. Being frequently off-task (sleeping, doing
other homework, talking, using your phone, etc.) will result in a conduct grade of N. You
need to learn to take responsibility for your actions.
2. Be Prepared!
a. Bring all class materials every day unless otherwise instructed. Pencils should be sharpened and
materials ready when the tardy bell rings. Come ready to listen, learn, and work hard.
b. Outside tutoring is available on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons (tentative). Don’t get behind!
3. Be on Time!
a. The door will close when the tardy bell rings. Students are expected to be IN THEIR SEATS
when the late bell rings. If you need to go to the restroom, please wait until there is a stopping
point in the instruction (during seat work, etc.). You don’t want to miss any instruction.

*Syllabus is subject to change.
