Time Business Items

8:15 Take attendance, have a volunteer give an opening prayer

Warm-up/Introduction/Review
 Write on the board: Enrique enjoys his job.
8:20
 Ask Ss where the noun phrase is. Underline it (his job).
 Tell Ss we can change the noun phrase to a noun clause (n.c.). This is what we’re
going to talk about for this unit.

8:25 Teaching/Learning Activities

Prese
 Mention that his job in our sentence on the board is the object of the verb enjoys.
nt
 Explain that some verbs can be followed with n.c. instead of noun phrases.
 Ask if anyone knows what parts of speech a clause requires. Explain that a clause
requires a subject and a verb.
 Point out the sentence Enrique enjoys his job again. Erase his job and replace it
with what he does. Underline this change and label it noun clause. Ask Ss to
identify the subject and the verb of the n.c. Label them:
S V
he does
 Ask Ss which word in the n.c. we didn’t label (what). Explain that a n.c. can start
with a question word. Label it:
Q S V
what he does
 Ask Ss what other question words we have. (Answers may include what, who,
whose, when, where, why, and how.)
8:35  Write on the board: I know his address.
Practi  Ask Ss where the noun phrase is. Underline it (his address). Underneath, write the
ce sentence with a n.c. instead of a phrase: I know where he lives. Ask Ss to identify
the n.c. and underline it (where he lives). Ask Ss to label the parts of the clause:
Q S V
where he lives
 Write on the board: Who is in the office?
 Ask Ss to rephrase the question using the phrase I wonder… Give them a minute
to think about it. They should write their answer down. Ask for ideas, and then write
the answer: I wonder who is in the office.
 Do the same with the sentence Which song is Enrique’s favorite? Give Ss a minute
to think, take answers, and write: I wonder which song is Enrique’s favorite.
8:40  Have Ss open to page 372, exercise 4 of the textbook. Read the example (#1)
Practi together. Then, give Ss 2 minutes to complete the exercise individually. Go over
ce the answers together (page 459).
8:45  Look at page 372 exercise 5. Read the instructions and #1 together. Have Ss work
Practi in pairs to complete the exercise. Give them about 10 minutes.
ce/Pro  Have each group share one or two of their answers. Make sure each reads the
duce entire question—not the just the answer. (Answers on page 459.)
9:00  Open to page 374–375. Have Ss talk with a new partner about these questions.
Produ Tell them they should each ask and answer each number. If they finish early, they
ce should come up with original questions. Monitor S work.

9:15 Summary/Conclusion
 Ask Ss which parts of a n.c. we talked about today (question word, subject, verb).
Mention that we will continue to talk about n.c. throughout this unit.
 Remind Ss that we use n.c. quite often without even realizing it. Pull up “Do You
Know” lyric video by Enrique Iglesias (https://youtu.be/Pkaimt1xIc4).
 Tell Ss to pay attention to the n.c. used in the song.
