GROUP-C
Q1: a Francis turbine with an overall efficiency of 75% is required to produce 148.25KW
power. It is working under a head of 7.62m. The peripheral velocity= 0.26 √2gH and the
radial velocity of flow at inlet is 0.96√2gH. The wheel runs at 150 r.p.m. and the hydraulic
losses in the turbine are 22% of available energy. Assuming radial discharge, determine:
Q3: A jet of water having a velocity of 20m/s strikes a curved vane, which is moving with a
velocity of 10m/s. The jet makes an angle of 200 with the direction of motion of vane at inlet
and leaves at an angle of 1300 to the direction of motion of vane of an outlet. Calculate:
(i) Vane angle, so that the water enters and leaves the vane without shock.
(ii) Work done per second per unit weight of water striking (or work done per unit
weight of water striking) the vane per second.
Q4: A Pelton wheel has a mean bucket speed of 10 meters per second with a jet of water
flowing at the rate of 700 liters/s under a head of 30 meters. The buckets deflect the jet
through an angle of 1600. Calculate the power given by water to the runner and the hydraulic
efficiency of the turbine. Assume co-efficient of velocity as 0.98.
Q5: What is the force exerted by the jet on an unsymmetrical moving curve plate when the jet
strikes tangentially at one of the tip.
Q6: Explain the working of centrifugal pump with neat diagram; also discuss about its
different parts.
Q7: The internal and external diameters of the impeller of centrifugal pump are 200mm and
400mm respectively. The vane angle of the impeller at inlet and outlet are 200 and 300
respectively. The water enters the impeller radially and velocity of flow is constant.
Determine the work done by impeller per unit weight of water.
Q8: Explain the working of single acting reciprocating pump with neat diagram.
Q9: Explain the working of double acting reciprocating pump with neat diagram.
Q10: Derive the expression for the Force exerted by a jet of water on series of vanes.
