SIMULATION OF A BUCK CHOPPER

Aim: To plot the output voltage and current waveforms of buck converter on a RL load and later on check
the same wave forms by using a LC filter to remove harmonics in output load.
Apparatus: personal computer, PSPICE software, Manual.
Theory: Write the operation of a buck converter in RL Load, CCM.
Problem Statement: -
For a buck chopper, DC voltage = 200V, Load Resistance = 10ohms, Load Inductance = 1mH. For a
Duty cycle of 0.4, Calculate average and RMS values of output voltage and obtain the current and voltage
waveforms. The Switching Frequency of IGBT is 10kHz.
Points to Remember: -
Ton
 The output voltage of a buck converter is V0  Vin .
T
 IGBT is a bipolar, unidirectional Switch.
 An Inductor in series with Load is used to smoothen the output current.
 A Capacitor in parallel to load is used to smoothen the output Voltage.

Procedure: -
1. Open MATLAB Software in computer
2. Enter into Simulink Library and copy the necessary block into model environment.
3. Open parameters of each block and enter the necessary data given.
4. Connect the blocks to form a buck converter.
5. Simulate the circuit for a time of 1sec and observe the output voltage and current waveforms also
note down RMS and Average values.
6. Reconnect the circuit with LC Filter to eliminate ripples in current and voltage waveforms.
7. Again, simulate the circuit and observe the output voltage and current waveforms, also note down
RMS and Average values.
