A visit to this city should start at Plaza Bolivar, as around this Park, there
·i s a neighbourhood known as Barrio La Candelaria , where most of the best mansi-
ons and buildings o£ colonial times are. There are many Churches, Museums, and

Oro. (the Cold Museum), as no less than 18,000 pieces of Precolumbian gold work
are shown. From Bogota you have transportation to almost every place in Colom-
bia. Relatively close to the city are many points of interest a a well, i.e. the
Salt Hines oC Zipaquica and the beautiful artificial lake of Hina , formed by a
daan.

days. It used to be active between 1000'-0400 on 4845 k"z, with
one kw; it used to be a good verifier as well. Bucara~anga city is 420 km from
Dogot~, and lt ia Capital oC Santander Department. It stands at 1020 ~as~ on an
uncvon plateau aharply delimited by eroded •lopea to the N and W, hilla to the
£ and r~vine to the S . Founded in 1622, it became a lacqe city only in the sec-
ond h a lf of the 19th. century. Population is ~50,000 and main income · are coffee
and tobacco plantations. The place is very hot, average temperature is 30 degre
cs C! Worst proble~ is the lack of space for expansion, as hills surrounding
th~ city offer great erosion after rainfalls, which arc usually very heavy . Is
th1a erosion that offers the moat spectacular views to the tourists.
• CUCUTA • rrom thio town, if you are lucky, you may log Radio Nueva Vida, on

kilowatts. It is the Capital of the Department of Santander del Norte, and only
16 km . fro~ the Venezuelan frontier. founded 1734, destroyed by earthquake 1875,

an town , on is San CristObal . Roads in the area arc excellent, far better than
in other Colorobian departments.
• fLOREHClA • From Florencia (pop. 50,000) you may log several well-known s tns,
i.e. R. Ondaa del Orteguazo (on 4976.2 kllz,l000-2300/0300v , lkw),
an easy catch here in B.A. ' in the early mornings, or a difficult one, LV de la
Sel va, broadcaoting with 2.5 kw on 6170 k"z @ 0900-0400. We know this 2nd . stn .
is active thanks to Venezuelan & Colombian DXers , but R. Cultura de Sio Paulo,
on the samo froquoncy, makes this s tn an impossible dream Cor me.
The region's main income is cattle-raising; the natural f.oreat of the area has
been cleared in many places for this purpose; the area surrounding Florencia,
has been cleared in a 10-15 km radius, there you may observe many tall palm-tr~
es, the fruits of which ace a delicacy for cattle grazing . Surrounding Floren-
cia there are extensive rain-forests; views are spectacular,particularly in the
~ry season (January-March) when tropical flowers are everywhere. Town was ori-
ginally established in 1908. · .
• IIJACU& • From the capital of Tolima Department, you may log a recently react~

inc her newborn baby on her back. and my other 6ve brothen and sisten around
her, hungry. Sinoc the children who don't work are not led by the ownen, she
never earned enough. My wage, when I started. was twenty cents • d>y. ·
If we migrated from the: hi&hbnds to wo rk on the plantations it won because

amount of com and boons that lasted for lour or 6ve months. The rest of the ye•r

When I was eleven, two of my little brothen died on the pl•nutlons from

When my brothers died. my mother asked lor permission to bury them. be·
cawc our burial ceremonies arc very imponant to us; but pe rmission w:u denied.
So she took • day o ff, and returned to work the following day.. . . They 6red w,
and they didn"t pay us lor the 61reen days we had alreody worked. So we returned
home. to the hichlands. There my mother had to S<ll the few animals she had in
order to feed us. A few months later, when my lather returned from the pbnb-
bon where he was workinc. he discovered that he had lost two sons.

feed the dogs and dean the com lor the tortillu; the other prls prepared the com

reody to go to the 6elds. People in the village would call their neichbon in order
