Darkened Kingdoms - Armour

Armor

Most militaries in the kingdoms have developed armour to protect their

soldiers on the field of battle. These designs have been adopted by other

organizations as well, including the Kathinic Knighthood, for example. Most

armour can be purchased on the open market without any special requirements.

Armour designs take into account the need for protection from weapon

blows, as well as bullets, and even bolts and arrows.

While no particular design is infallible, modern armour provides far more

superior protection than none at all.

All armour types have two versions; half armour, and full coat armour.

Half armour consists of torso and arm coverings, as well as shin cover

(often built into footwear specific to that armor); essentially a tunic that is

donned like a jacket, and extends just below the waist.

Full armor dons in much the same manner, but is a long great coat that

extends to the knee area (or longer), providing more protection.

Design

All armor types share a similar design theme. The outer shell, which is

heavy leather (often layered), with inner pockets that allow for metal, or

hardened leather plates, to be inserted at strategic areas to protect vulnerable

body parts. The inside is then lined with a quilted liner that provides buffering

against blows and attacks, as well as insulation against adverse weather

conditions.

The following attributes define how armor functions in the

game.

Armor - Table

Armor Cost Armor Class Strength Stealth Weight

Light Armor

Half 25gp 13 - - 15 lb.

Full 50gp 16 - - 25 lb.

Medium Armor

Half 65gp 14 - - 20 lb.

Full 100gp 17 - Dis 30 lb.

Heavy Armor Dis

Full 300gp 18 Str 12 Dis 40 lb.

Armor Proficiency

Anyone can put on a suit of armor, but only those proficient in the armor’s

use know how to wear it effectively, however.

Your class gives you proficiency with certain types of armor. If you wear

armor that you lack proficiency with, you have disadvantage on any ability

check, saving throw, or attack roll that involves Strength or Dexterity,

and you can’t cast spells.

Armor Class (AC)

Armor protects its wearer from attacks. The armor you wear determines

your base Armor Class.

Heavy Armor

Heavier armor interferes with the wearer’s ability to move quickly,

stealthily, and freely.

If the Armor table shows “Str 15” in the Strength column for an armor

type, the armor reduces the wearer’s speed by 10 feet unless the wearer has a

Strength score equal to or higher than the listed score.

Stealth

If the Armor table shows “Disadvantage” in the Stealth column, the

wearer has disadvantage on Dexterity (Stealth) checks.

Light Armor

Light armor represents

either armor that covers

parts of the body without

offering uniform protection,

or armor made from

lightweight materials that do

not offer the same protection

as heavier armors. It is

typically favored by those

individuals who prefer

unencumbered movement to the weight of heavier, more protective armor, or

those who cannot afford heavier armor.

Light armor is lined with hardened leather plates, and is produced using

modern manufacturing methods is commonly available throughout the major

cities of the Darkened Kingdoms.

Though not as strong as metal armor, leather provides a surprising

amount of protection.

Medium Armor

Medium armor is made up of

protective layers of chain, metal

plate, and leather armor. Though

heavier than light armor, medium

armor provides good protection with

little impact on mobility.

Light metal pauldrons are often a

part of the armor.

Heavy Armor

Heavy armor has

thick metal plates in it’s

inserts, and while

cumbersome, still allows

the wearer a great

amount of mobility .

Often, heavy

pauldrons are part of the

armor that protect the

shoulders as well as a

large area of the back.
