Awareness
Understanding the meanings of prefixes and suffixes along with root words will give you
the ability to determine a word’s meaning without having to look it up. American
English is not one language. It is the conglomeration of global languages with an
emphasis on Latin and Greek. Those are were prefixes, root words and suffixes come
from. You don’t need to memorize or understand their meanings.
c. Lesson Proper
What is a prefix?
-A prefix is a letter or sequence of letters attached to the beginning of a word, root, or
phrase to change its meaning. And it changes the meaning of a word.
Example of prefixes
Dis = not, do the opposite of Re = again Mis = wrong Post = after Pre = before, in
front of
Example sentences
- I hope they don’t discontinue my favorite flavor of ice cream.
- The teacher made the students redo their homework because they had the wrong
answers.
- The boy felt misunderstood.
- The basketball players had a postgame interview.
- The students took a pretest to prepare them for the real one.
-A suffix is a letter or sequence of letters that may be added to the end of a word, root,
or phrase to change its meaning.
Example of suffixes
-able , +ible = able to, capable of -ful = full of
-or = one who does something -less = without
Example sentences
-The kids were not allowed to play ball in the house because there were so many
breakable items.
-The girl was careful not to scare her fish when cleaning its tank.
-The editor fixed all of the mistakes the writer made.
-The search for the treasure seemed endless.
-Roots are words left when you take away prefixes and suffixes. And we make new
words from root words by adding prefixes and suffixes. For example, we can add
the prefixes bi to the root word cycle, or we can add the suffix ing to the root
word examine to form the word examining.
Example of sentences
Can you give me an example of a sentence containing the prefix dis?
How about the prefix un?
Can you me an example of a sentence containing the suffix or?
How about the prefix able?
-Start looking for prefixes and suffixes in the books you are reading. They are
everywhere.
-Keep a list and look up what they mean so you can share them with the class (in each
word you can get additional 2 points)
