1.2 A well mixed sample is filtered through a weighed standard whatman filter and the residue
retained on the filter is dried to a constant weight at 103 to 105 º C.The increase in the
weight of the filter paper represents the Total Suspended Solids

2.0 APPARATUS
2.1 Whatman Filter Paper
2.2 Oven for drying
2.3 Analytical Balance
2.4 100 ml measuring cylinder
2.5 Desiccator

3.0 REAGENTS
3.1 NONE

4.0 PROCEDURE
4.1 Sample 100 ml of water in a clean previously dried conical flask.
4.2 Take a piece of whatman filter paper and keep it on drying at 100 º C for o 15 to 20 min
4.3 Take initial weight of whatman filter paper that is (A)
4.4 Filter the sample through the whatman filter paper.
4.5 Keep it for drying the filter paper at 100 º C for 1 hr in a Oven.
4.6 Cool the paper in the desiccator to balance the temperature.
4.7 Weigh the filter paper immediately after drying. (B)

4.8 CALCULATION
i. Weight of the paper . - A
ii. Weight of the paper + sample after drying - B
iii. Volume of the sample - 100ml
