Mixing Formalism:
Evidently, the strong interaction Hamiltonian*:
M 0 1 0
H strong = eigenstates: K = K =
0 0
0 M 0 1
acquires off-diagonal “mixing terms” due to the weak interaction:
1 1
M V eigenstates: K1 = 2 K 2 = 2
1 1
H = − 1 1
V M eigenvalues: E1 = M + V E2 = M − V
Time evolution −
i
( M +V )t −
i
( M −V )t i
− Mt cos Vh t
introduces oscillation: K1e h
+ K 2e h
= 2e h V
i sin h t
K1 and K2 (imaginary) decay rates are added on the diagonal
* Rest frame assumed to avoid extra contributions to the energy.

The Kaon System
K1 = 1
2
(K 0
−K0 ) ⇒ CP (K1 ) = 1
2
(− K + K ) = K
0 0
1 CP = +1
K2 = 1
2
(K 0
+K0 ) ⇒ CP (K 2 ) = −1
2
(K + K ) = − K
0 0
2 CP = −1
Experimental Perspective
τ (s) Main decay modes Γi / Γ Experimental use
π+π– 69.2% useful for calibration,
K1 ~10-10
π 0π 0 30.7% conveniently short lifetime
π+l–νl or conj. (Kl3) 67.6%
interesting potential source of CP
K2 ~10-8 3π0 19.6%
violation; can regenerate K1
π+π–π0 12.6%
Regeneration
K 0 + p → Λ0 + π +
(K )
: strong interactions:
K2 =
1 0
+K 0
must conserve strangeness
2
K 0 + p → Λ0 + K 0 + K +
leave little free energy – unlikely!
K1 decayed
away by this
point
to avoid interactions,
regeneration etc.

Data Analysis
Not so for other possible (3-body) decays – Ke3, Kµ3, Kπ3: decay
products are lost. Result:
• invariant mass is undercounted
• θ≠0
So, having subtracted the background as shown and taken into account
relative detection efficiencies, there were found 45 ± 9 CP-violating
π+π– decays out of a total of 22700 events. This corresponds to a
branching ratio of 0.20 ± 0.04 %.
