10 GOOD REASONS TO CHOOSE SLU

SHAPING THE FUTURE
10 GOOD REASONS TO CHOOSE SLU

1. SLU IS A WORLD-CLASS UNIVERSITY

The Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences is recog-
nised internationally as being amongst the top universities
in the world, and is consistently ranked as one of Sweden’s
best. With more than 12 000 universities worldwide, the
Times Higher Education (THE) ranking places SLU in the
top 200–250. The Centre for Higher Education Development
Excellence (CHE) ranking considers SLU to be amongst the
stronger and more internationally focused European universi-
ties. For the second consecutive year, Urank classifies SLU as
one of the top three universities in Sweden.

2. UNIQUE PROGRAMMES AND COURSES

SLU offers students a wide variety of unique and innovative
programmes and courses, many of which can only be found
at SLU. These programmes introduce students to new and
exciting fields of research, ones that are relevant today and
of increasing importance to the future. Areas of study include
natural resources, veterinary medicine, landscape design,
agronomy and forest sciences.

3. GROUND-BREAKING RESEARCH
SLU is one of Sweden’s most research-intensive universities
and produces almost one third of all biological research in
Sweden. Over 70% of all resources at SLU are put towards
research, which is specifically focused on the sustainable use
of biological natural resources.

4. SLU IS MAKING A DIFFERENCE

In addition to research and education, the Swedish govern-
ment has given SLU the task of conducting environmental
monitoring and assessment throughout Sweden and inter-
nationally. SLU monitors the country’s forests, agricultural
landscapes, lakes, watercourses and species in order to
analyse environmental trends. This makes SLU a key-player
in interpreting and understanding environmental changes and
developments, such as global warming.

5. COMMITTED TEACHING STAFF

SLU has one of the highest teacher-to-student ratios in Swe-
den: 1 teacher for every 2.6 students. There is a close link
between education and research at the university, and many
of SLU’s teaching and research staff are among the current
world-leaders in their fields. This allows students to receive
the most current, up-to-date information and to learn from the
very best.
7

10 GOOD REASONS TO CHOOSE SLU

SHAPING THE FUTURE
6. SLU GRADUATES FIND EMPLOYMENT
By choosing to study at SLU, students are taking an active step
in their careers. An annual review of higher education states
that SLU graduates have one of the highest percentages of
employment in Sweden. Specifically, SLU students with de-
grees in landscape architecture, natural sciences, technique,
veterinary medicine, veterinary nursing and animal welfare are
more likely to find qualified employment after graduating than
students from any other Swedish university. SLU is also one
of the top universities when it comes to the percentage of stu-
dents who move on to postgraduate research education.

7. VIBRANT CAMPUSES
SLU’s university grounds and research facilities are spread
throughout Sweden, with four main campuses located in
Alnarp, Skara, Umeå and Uppsala. SLU’s campuses are
clean and picturesque, have world-class facilities, and allow
students to discover the wonders of Sweden. Recently, the
university made substantial investments in the development
of campus facilities and several striking new buildings were
constructed for teaching and research purposes.

8. DYNAMIC STUDENT LIFESTYLE

Being a student at SLU is an exciting, memorable, and life-
changing experience. Time spent outside of the classroom is
very important, which is why SLU provides so many extra-cur-
ricular opportunities. Students can organise and attend balls
and other social functions, play sports and games, sing in
choirs, act in plays, take dance classes, get a hunting licence
and much more. These activities encourage SLU students to
meet each other, exchange ideas and make lifelong friends.

9. THE STUDENT VOICE IS HEARD

SLU is a diverse and liberal university community where all
students share the same rights, responsibilities, and oppor-
tunities, regardless of their gender, transgender identity or
expression, ethnicity, religion or other belief, disability, sexual
orientation and age. SLU does not tolerate any form of har-
assment or discrimination and is committed to providing all
students with support and guidance, including those with
physical or learning disabilities. Through the student union,
students can have a say in important decision-making pro-
cesses at the university.

10. ENGLISH PROFICIENCY

Although Swedish is the official national language, Swedish
people are in general very good at speaking English. In fact,
Sweden is the second most English-proficient country in the
world where English is not the official language, making it very
easy for tourists and international students to get around. At
SLU, almost all postgraduate programmes are conducted in
English.

THE HEART OF SLU
Uppsala is Sweden’s forth-largest city and just a
forty-minute train ride away from Stockholm. In
Sweden, Uppsala is regarded as a progressive
city, a place for those who want to learn, discover
and develop. The abundance of students in
Uppsala helps to create an open and freethinking
environment, and the student nations occupy a
central role in Uppsala student life.

Considered the hub of SLU, the Uppsala campus delivers

programmes and courses in agriculture, forestry, food sci-
ence, biotechnology, natural resources, ecology, economy,
landscape planning, animal husbandry, animal protection and
welfare, livestock genetics, and veterinary medicine. In fact,
SLU Uppsala is the only place in the country where you can
earn a degree in agronomy and veterinary medicine.
SLU’s Uppsala campus is located in Ultuna, approximately
6 km outside the city centre. Known as a city of bicycles, cy-
cling is the most popular mode of transportation for students.
Ultuna is an ideal area for sporting activities, with football
pitches, a beach volleyball course, a frisbeegolf course,
jogging and bicycle paths, and a gym on campus. Students
are also welcome to visit the two off-campus gyms run by the
Student Health Centre.
The two main universities in Uppsala are SLU and Upp-
sala University. Combined, they have over 35 000 students,
almost one fifth of the city’s population. Finding student
accommodation in Uppsala can therefore be challenging,
but is by no means impossible. By placing your name in an
accommodation queue early, you will greatly increase your
chances of finding appropriate student accommodation.
Those looking to get involved in Uppsala’s student life
can turn to the student nations, which are responsible for

SLU’S
HORSEPOWER
For hundreds of years, horse-related research and
education has been conducted at three national
equestrian horse centres, Flyinge, Strömsholm
and Wången. The main task of these centres is
to educate professional equestrians in issues
relating to the modern horse industry, specifically,
using horses for sport and leisure. These centres
are recognised worldwide for being leaders in the
fields of equine education, research and breeding.

As a student at SLU, you have a unique opportunity to study at

one of these centres as a part of your programme. In fact, SLU
is the only university in Sweden to collaborate with the national
equestrian horse centres on such a large scale. For those with
a passion for horses, this is a once in a lifetime opportunity.
The national equestrian horse centres deliver teaching
and education of a very high standard. The SLU students
who attend these centres are able to learn from the leading
professionals within the equine industry, including former
Olympians. Picturesque backdrops, modern architecture and
state-of-the-art facilities provide an optimum learning environ-
ment for students. In addition, working in close contact with
some of the hundreds of resident horses is an invaluable
experience for students at SLU.
During the duration of your studies, you will find accom-

EXCELLENCE
Roughly 70% of SLU’s activity is comprised
of research, making it one of Sweden’s most
research-intensive universities. In fact, SLU is
responsible for a considerable part of all bio-
logical research in Sweden, and is home to a
number of internationally acclaimed scientists,
research groups and research centres. SLU
dominates international research within forest
science, landscape planning, and sustainable
societal development, and several of SLU’s
research groups are world leading. Through
its research, SLU is committed to finding the
most sustainable way to use and maintain the
earth’s natural resources, and to creating global
sustainable development.

SLU’s expert knowledge is increasingly in-demand. Climate

change, land use, food supply and the availability of clean
water are some of the global sustainability issues that
require immediate attention. Researchers at SLU are ready
to face these challenges. SLU’s strengths and profile areas
include: animal and human health, climate and ecosystem
change, genetic resources and biotechnology, quality in the
food chain, sustainable production and natural resources,
and urban and rural development. Future global demands
and national needs emphasise the importance of intensified
research. Combining the strengths of all four faculties, SLU
is concentrating on four global interdisciplinary research ar-
eas: Future Forests, Future Agriculture, Future Animal Health
and Welfare, and Future Urban Sustainable Environment.
An international comparison recently revealed that
scientists at SLU have some of the most cited publications
in their fields. In total, eight research teams were found to be
world leading, a huge accomplishment for a small univer-
sity. National studies have also shown that SLU’s research
has a great impact on the surrounding community and as
a university, SLU has a very high level of collaboration with
governmental departments, the green sector, and partner
universities in Sweden and around the world. Extension and
cooperation with the surrounding community is naturally

vocational information and assistance to undergraduates,
postgraduates and alumni. It also facilitates opportunities for
employers to make contact with students, distribute informa-
tion and raise their recruitment profile. SLU Careers can
help students with finding career direction, creating a CV,
developing interview skills, searching for jobs, finding work
experience, and volunteering opportunities. SLU Careers is
a complementary service and a valuable resource for all SLU

Studying abroad as part of an exchange programme or as a
Master’s student is an amazing experience, but is not always easy.
Being far away from family and friends, adjusting to a new culture,
and a heavy study load can cause students to feel overwhelmed.
At SLU, student welfare is taken very seriously. There are a num-
ber of student support services available, and staff members are
always on hand to aid and support the student community.
