No: REGULATION OF ALTERNATORS BY ASA METHOD

AIM:
To determine the regulation of Alternator by ASA method.

APPARATUS REQUIRED:

S.LO Name of Apparatus Range Type Quantity

220Ω/0.8A, &
1 Rheostat --- 1
1170 Ω/0.8A
2 Voltmeter (0-600V) MI 1

4 Ammeter (0-10A) MI 1

5 Ammeter (0-2A) MC 1

6 Connecting wires --- --- ---

FORMULA:

1. % Regulation = (E0 -V)*100 / V in %

E0 = No Load Voltage
V = Full Load Voltage
PROCEDURE:
OPEN CIRCUIT TEST:
1. Connections are made as per the circuit diagram
2. Close the DPST switch
3. Start the DC motor by using three point starter
4. Bring the speed of DC motor to its rated value by adjusting the field and armature rheostat.
5. Excite the field of alternator and note down the corresponding field current and generated
voltage.
6. Repeat the above step till the alternator builds up its rated generated value.
7. After taking the readings all the rheostats will be brought to the original position.
8. Open the DPST switch.
9. The graph of generated voltage VS field current gives the open circuit characteristics.

SHORT CIRCUIT TEST:

1. The alternator armature circuits are short circuited by an ammeter.

2. Connections are made as per the circuit diagram.
3. Close the DPST switch.
4. Start the DC motor by using three-point starter.
5. Bring the speed of DC motor to its rated value by adjusting the field and armature rheostats.
6. DC excitation is applied across the field winding till the alternator reads its full load current.
7. Note down the corresponding field current and short circuit current of the alternator.
8. After taking the readings all the rheostats will be brought to the original position.
9. Open the DPST switch.
10. The graph of short circuit current Vs field current gives short circuit characteristics.

TO FIND E0 :

1. OCC curve is drawn and terminal voltage is found out on linear position at OCC curve.
2. Corresponding if for terminal voltage is marked.
3. The corresponding If for SCC test on full load current (90+ ø) for lagging from point A.
Taking field current as radius and ø intercepts drawn on Y-axis and mark it as ‘P’.
4. From P draw a perpendicular line to ‘Y’ axis till the line meet the OCC curve and mark it.
5. With OCC as radius and ‘O’ as center drawn on Y-axis and mark it as E.
6. From E draw a line parallel to Y-axis passing through it . ‘a’ & ‘c’ is marked as air gap line and
‘s’ is marked.
7. With a distance create If, SC line, mark distance as OS.
8. With ‘a’ as radius and ‘O’ as center draw an arc which cuts short circuit axis and from s draw a
parallel line to y-axis till it cuts OCC on that point draw a parallel line to x-axis and it cuts y-
axis at R.
9. By taking values of E0 regulation is calculated for lagging power factor (90+ ø) from point D.
