PERSONAL STATEMENT

Since 1989 Romania has undergone deep changes in each and every aspect of life,
but probably the one where these changes are the most evident is that of the mass-media.
From a limited number of newspapers and two television channels, what we have today in
our country is almost incredible.
This field is highly appreciated by society and coveted by the political caste. It is
also the one that plays an important part in changing human mentalities through education,
motivation and information. As this domain has grown, communication has followed the
same track. The Romanian school tries to form specialists in this field but system failure
seen in the break between theoretical knowledge and practical abilities makes professional
competences of graduates less edifying. I consider that the mass media are a kaleidoscope
of words, thoughts and opinions.
Since I entered the “Mihai Viteazul” National College I have had the opportunity of
working with different people. This has offered me the chance of taking part into projects
that implied responsibilities and team-work abilities. It seemed to me that communication
was a very interesting field and this is why I got involved in the college team working for
the school radio station and the school magazine. After a year I received more important
duties, I was supposed to supervise the activity of my school mates. But it was the arrival
of some American journalists and the course they organized for the students that really
made me understand that this was the field I wanted to make a career in. After this I
offered to take part in an important project, organized by the Ministry of Culture, called
“Traces” that wanted to draw the map of Bucharest as it appeared in literature. For about a
month we were supposed to read various books carefully and find specific buildings,
streets or means of transport. Some of them were real, some were just fiction but after this
period our intense work was transformed into a virtual map and a published book about
Bucharest.
In a few years I see myself part of a great leading team that tries to make society a
place for intelligent open-minded persons. I truly want to make a difference and to help
Romania by changing the way many people think. Evolution is strictly related to will and
determination and I want to be part in any society’s blooming.
Working in the media will, in my opinion, offer me the chance to influence the
mentality of the people, to make them more responsible, more aware of what the vital
issues of present day society are. I trust that this is the way to make the difference between
self-awareness and ignorance. Mass-media are the most directly courses to people if you
want to make them realize and understand reality.
I think that Coventry University can offer me suitable conditions for my career
development. Studying abroad is for me a great opportunity and challenge. I wish to
become a professional in this field and to acquire the skills and abilities that are needed for
success. That is why I am looking forward to becoming a student in this university.
