Getting your herds up to date in MINDA and Protrack

If your management system relies on an accurate count of animals in each herd within your
shed then these tips will help you to manage this.

• Protrack allows to leverage off the fact that every animal that walks through the
shed gets read either at the draft gate or on the platform. This allows Protrack tag a 'location
name' with each animal.

• A Protrack installation may have multiple 'locations' which are used for
managing either separate herds of animals in the same shed or multiple Protrack systems
using one MINDA database.

Step 1: Initial set-up

0. Open Protrack Config on your desktop

0. Select Location

0. Click New

0. Type in a herd name and set the milking times as per your usual settings

0. Click Update

0. Repeat for the remainder of your herds

Step 2: MINDA Software

0. Open MINDA pro

0. Create rule based groups for every herd with the following rules: Dairy Name
equals This Value (select the appropriate Dairy name)

0. Tick Most Recent Value

0. Click Next and O.K.

0. Now create an empty Pick Your Own (PYO) group for each of these herd with a
similar name. E.g. Herd 1 becomes Mob 1. Note: these are 'Working Groups' that we will copy
all the animals from the Rule Based Groups above into after each stocktake.

Step 3: Protrack Software

0. Reopen Protrack Config

0. Select Groups

0. Colour code the groups for easy display

Step 4: The 'In-Shed' Process

0. Before the first animal walks on to platform

0. Close Protrack

0. Open Protrack Config

0. Select Current

0. Click the dropdown arrow next to Location and select the herd due to enter the
shed first

0. Click Update and Exit

0. Now re-open Protrack

0. Repeat for additional herds. Repeat step 1-7 as above but in step 5 select your
next herd (note: for this process to work: Every animal in first herd must exit past the Draft Gate
Antenna before the first animal from the second herd walks on platform.

Step 5: After Milking

0. Open MINDApro

0. Synchronise MINDA (this rebuilds the group)

0. Open the first Rule Based herd Group

0. Right click in the middle of the animals and left click on select all

0. Then right click again and select Copy Animals to Group

0. Select the corresponding PYO Group e.g. Mob 1

0. Click Next and Finish

0. Repeat for additional herds

0. After you have completed this: Open Protrack Config and set the Current Dairy
back to the original

How to display MINDA Groups in Protrack

Here's how you display MINDA Groups in your Protrack software:

If an animal is a member of the selected group then the group colour will display in the group
column in Protrack.

0. Under the Protrack column select true for the groups you want to display in
Protrack

0. Under the colour column select the colour you want the group to display as in
Protrack

0. Under the orde column select the order of priority. You can have as many groups
selected as you wish, however only 5 groups will display per cow

0. Order the group column to reflect your orde priority

0. Select update

0. Ensure the group column is added to the relevant Protrack layout, i.e. Mating
Layout.
