What is a greenhouse ?
Greenhouse is used to grow
vegetables and plants in temperate
climates, especially during winter. A
greenhouse is designed to trap solar
energy. Sunlight penetrates the glass
roof of a greenhouse to warm the
soil. However, the heat given off by
the soil cannot pass through the
glass, so it remains inside to warm
the air. This means that the heat
from the sun is trapped inside the
greenhouse and this keeps the
plants warm throughout winter
The Greenhouse Effect
1. Sunlight enters the Earth’s
atmosphere.
2. Some solar radiation is reflected
back to space.
3. Most of the radiation is absorbed
by the Earth. This warms the
surfaces of the sea and land.
4. As the Earth is warmed, heat in the
form of infrared radiation is
radiated back into space.
5. However, much of this heat does
not escape from the atmosphere
but remains trapped by the
greenhouse gases, warming the
atmosphere.
6. At the same time, the greenhouse
gases cause the infrared rays to be
radiated back towards the surface
of the Earth.
Effects
1. Occurrence of flood
As the average temperature rises,
the polar ice caps and glaciers
melt.This increases the sea level
causing low-lying areas to be
flooded.
2. Climate changes
Global warming leads to changes in
wind directions and distribution of
rainfall. As a result, agricultural
activities are affected.Global
warming causes weather patterns to
change. This affects the distribution
of species which may lead to the
extinction of species in certain
region.
3. Occurrence of droughts
Global warming increases the
frequency of droughts.The land
becomes dry and infertile. This leads
to a drop yields.
