RIVOLI Center Structural Design Criteria

I. Structural Design Parameters:

1. Basic Codes and Standards:
All structural elements are to be designed in accordance with the applicable requirements and
recommendations of the reference codes and standards to meet or exceed the specified
performance. The requirements and recommendations of these codes and standards are to be
regarded as minimum criteria.

2. Reference Codes and Standards (Latest editions and amendments):

UBC 97 Division IV – Earthquake Design.
ACI – 318M 2014 Building Code.
Requirements for Structural Concrete.

3. Structural Materials:

a. Reinforcement:
The following design strengths are to be used for the design of reinforcement:
 Mild Steel 240 N/MM2
 High tensile strength steel 400 N/mm2
Reinforcement will be detailed as appropriate to ensure ductility for the seismic load
condition.

b. Concrete:
Unless noted otherwise concrete is to be normal –weight, with a typical dry density of
2500kg/m3. Concrete is to achieve the following 28-day cylinder strength:

Superstructure Slabs 30.0 N/mm2

Columns and walls 30.0 N/mm2

Basement External Walls 30.0 N/mm2

Foundation 25.0 N/mm2

Blinding Concrete 20.0 N/mm2

c. Masonry:
Masonry is to confirm to BS 5628 Use of Masonry.

4. Loading:
Loading, where not specified by the client, will be assessed in accordance with the relevant
codes.

3/7
RIVOLI Center Structural Design Criteria

a. Dead Load Design Allowance:

As a guide the following dead load allowances may be assumed where appropriate:

Material Kg/m3

Reinforcement concrete 2500

Structural Steelwork 7850

Masonry (Solid block partitions) 2200

Sand /Cement Screed 2300

Plaster 1700

Glass 2700

b. Super – imposed Dead Load Allowances:

Superimposed Dead Loads are to be advised by the Architect and Services Engineer as
appropriate.

c. Live Load Design Allowances:

The loading requirements below are based on building uses required by the building occupier.
In addition, account will be taken of specific equipment’s loading requirements, building
maintenance and cleaning equipment’s and construction requirements. Allowance will be
made for the following live loading where appropriate:

 Parking: 5 KN/m2

 Floors: 3 KN/m2

d. Wind Load:
due to the location and height of the building, we assume that the exposure type of wind load
is B and the speed is 85 mph with importance factor equal 1.

e. Earthquake load:
Structure will be designed to a safely withstand Seismic loads considering the area to be
located in Zone = 0.25g classified area in accordance with the code. The structure will be
analyzed and using ETABS finite element analysis software.

f. Load combinations:
Load combinations will be in accordance with ACI 318-2005 and UBC 1997. Ultimate Loads
combinations used in model analysis are as follow:

Eq. ( 9 -1 ) 1.2DL + 1.6LL

Eq. ( 12 -5 ) 1.1(1.2DL + 0.5LL + 1.0EQX)
Eq. ( 12 -6 ) 1.1(0.9DL + 1.0EQX)
Eq. ( 12 -5 ) 1.1(1.2DL + 0.5LL - 1.0EQX)
Eq. ( 12 -6 ) 1.1(0.9DL - 1.0EQX)
Eq. ( 12 -5 ) 1.1(1.2DL + 0.5LL + 1.0EQY)
Eq. ( 12 -6 ) 1.1(0.9DL + 1.0EQY)
Eq. ( 12 -5 ) 1.1(1.2DL + 0.5LL - 1.0EQY)
Eq. ( 12 -6 ) 1.1(0.9DL - 1.0EQY)
Eq. (12 -7) 1.2DL+1.0LL+1.0WL
Eq. (12 -8) 1.2DL+1.0LL-1.0WL
Eq. (12 -9) 0.9DL+1.0WL
Eq. (12 -10) 0.9DL-1.0WL

Where:
 Z=0.25g
 Soil profile SD
 Ca=0.32 and Cv=0.47(Allowable Bearing Capacity=339 KPA)
 Ct=0.02
 Importance factor=1

5. Acceptance criteria Parameters:

a. Fire Protection:
Fire Rating: Elements fire rating are to be advised by the Architect. For preliminary design
purpose the following fire resistance periods (FRPs) have been assumed.

 Basement/ sub-structure – 2 hours

 Superstructure – 2 hour

b. Deflections:
The floor systems are to be designed to satisfy the Criteria of ACI stipulated in table 9.5 (b).

5/7
RIVOLI Center Structural Design Criteria

c. Durability:
A standard design life of 50 years has been assumed at this stage.

II. Structural systems:

The structure will be made with reinforced concrete.

1. Floor plate:
Analysis will be carried out based on the following loadings assumed for typical floors:

a. Super- imposed Dead Loads:

 Flooring (offices) 3.0 kN/m2
 Ceilings 0.1kN/m2
 Services 0.25kN/m2
 Lightweight Partitions(office) 1.0 kN/m2
 Partition walls: 2 KN/M2
 Fill (for Gardens): 20 KN/M3

b. Live Loads:
 Offices 3.0 kN/m2
 Parking: 5.0 kN/m2

2. Floor System:
All the floors will be cast in situ flat slabs with thickness as per mentioned on structural
drawings.

3. Lateral Stability:
Lateral stability will be provided by the action of core and shear walls and frames. Horizontal
loads will be transferred to the lateral resistant frames by means of the diaphragm action of the
floor plate.

a. Lateral Deflection Limits:

Earthquake story Drift as per UBC 1997 limitations.

4. Water Pressure:
No water pressure provides due to the soil nature and a drainage water system demanded from
the consultant.

5. Durability:
Durability will be achieved by adopting a combination of the following measures:

 Specifying high quality, dens and low permeability concretes.

 Specifying adequate cover.
 Application of external tanking system below ground and external protection above
ground.

RIVOLI Center Structural Design Criteria

Concrete below grade shall be designed as water excluding both to prevent ingress of water
and also to prevent aggressive ground water penetrating the concrete.
External water bars shall be provided on all construction joints in concrete below ground.

6. Foundation:
The foundation is a raft of thickness equal 1.4 m designed on SAFE software.

III. Design software’s:

ETABS model is used to make analysis and design of all vertical elements.
SAFE models are used to analyze Raft Foundation and slabs.
REVIT is used to prepare all structural drawings.
