Homework Solutions – Chapter 12

12-9 Six pound moles of ethane, three lb-moles of propane and one lb-mole of n-
butane are mixed in a closed container and the temperature is adjusted to 75oF. What is
the bubble-point pressure? What is the dew-point pressure? Calculate the compositions
of the gas and liquid at equilibrium at 75oF and 300 psia. You may assume that the
mixture behaves like an ideal solution.

Composition Vapor pressure

Component mole fraction at 75oF zjpvj zj/pvj
zj pvj
C2 0.6 610 366 0.00098
C3 0.3 135 40.5 0.00222
n-C4 0.1 35 3.5 0.00286
1.00 Pb=410 psia 0.00606

pd = 1/0.00606 = 165 psia

Equation 12-8. This is a trial-and-error solution; only the calculation with the final trial
value of ng = 0.532 will be shown.

Composition Vapor pressure

Eq 12-8 Eq. 12-2

n-C4 0.1 35 0.189 0.022
1.00 1.000 1.000

Since xj = 1.000, the trial value of nf = 0.532 is correct, and the compositions of the
liquid and gas are given in the table.

12.10 Determine the compositions of the gas and liquid phases of the mixture in
Exercise 12-9 at 75oF and 5000 psia. What do you results indicate about the
phase of this system?

Eq. 12-8 Several trial values are shown

at 75oF ng = 0.5 ng = 0.3 ng = 0.15 ng = 0.05

1.00 1.852 1.381 1.160 1.048

The trial value shows that the xj will not result in 1.0. Since the xj is always greater
than 1.0, the mixture is a liquid at 5000 psia.

Homework Solutions – Chapter 12

12-11 Determine the compositions of the gas and liquid phases of the mixture in
Exercise 12-9 at 75oF and 100 psia. What do your results indicate about the phase of this
system?

Eq. 12-8 Several trial values are shown

Vapor

Component mole fraction
at 75oF ng = 0.5 ng = 0.3 ng = 0.15 ng = 0.05

1.00 0.575 0.633 0.736 0.876

The trial value shows that the xj will not result in 1.0. Since the xj is always less than
1.0, the mixture is a gas at 100 psia.

12-13 Recalculate Exercise 12-9. Do not assume that the mixture acts like an ideal
solution. Use equilibrium ratios from Appendix A.
