A.1 Participants and consortium


The consortium consists of 10 specialised companies and university departments from 7 European
countries each representing key competences necessary to successfully achieve the project aims. Each
participant is serving a specific role in the project work in order to utilise the Appendix A -

The consortium consists of 10 specialised companies and university departments from 7 European
countries each representing key competences necessary to successfully achieve the project aims.
Each participant is serving a specific role in the project work in order to utilise the best knowledge
spread among European companies and institutes.

Below the professional capabilities of the consortium are given.

The consortium is constructed in order to cover the knowledge: offshore technology, hydro turbine
PTO and socio economics. The matrix below is illustrating how the different partner fits in.

Wave Dragon ApS (WD)

Role: Coordinating, wave technology, socio technology, exploitation and dissemination

The company represents the inventor of the Wave Dragon and have the exploitation right for the
Wave Dragon patent and know-how. The right for exploitation in Welsh waters is transferred to the
partly owned British daughter company Wave Dragon Wales Ltd.

The company is working as development company using employees originally coming from:
• Löwenmark FRI ApS managed by MSc Erik Friis-Madsen the inventor of the Wave Dragon technology
• SPOK ApS managed by Dr. H. C. Soerensen the coordinator of the previous Wave Dragon activities
• Nöhrlind, Research & Development Ltd (UK) managed by MBA Taus Nöhrlind acting as business de-
velopment manager for the Wave Dragon Ltd.

As inventor of the Wave Dragon, Erik Friis-Madsen will function as a key player in the design and
testing phases, securing that the ideas underlying the device design are communicated to the
responsible participants, and incorporated properly into the work. Also Erik Friis-Madsen plays an
important role in the evaluation of the test results. Previous experiences have clearly demonstrated
the value of involving the inventor in most aspects of the project, as he has on several occasions
presented novel and practical solutions to experienced problems.

Dr. Hans Chr. Sørensen member of the Board of the Danish Wind Turbine Owners Association. Dr.
Sørensen has 30 years of experience with management of international RTD projects, as well as large
construction projects, primarily within the renewable energy sector. Dr. Sørensen has a background in
structural engineering, especially concrete (FIP special committee on high-strength concrete), and has
a B.Sc. in business management.

Taus Nöhrlind is specialised in corporate strategy with focus on internationalisation. He has more than
10 years of experience in the field and has since 1997 focused on working with companies, within the
area of environmental and energy technology companies.

NIRAS AS (NIR)

Role: Design of offshore structure, wave prediction

NIRAS provides fully integrated and interdisciplinary services in Denmark and internationally. The
services include all stages of project development - from initial feasibility studies through design and
construction to operation and training. NIRAS has a high degree of expertise within: Civil and
Structural Engineering, Energy and Environment Engineering, Tendering and Procurement.

The following activities have special interest regarding the actual project:

Design of Gravity and Monopile Offshore Wind Farm Foundations

Dr. techn. Olav Olsen a.s (OO)

Role: Design concept for the concrete structure

Dr.techn.Olav Olsen is an independent structural and marine engineering company engaged in


consulting, design and engineering for the Norwegian and international oil & gas industry, civil
construction and the industrial production industry. Dr.techn.Olav Olsen undertakes project- &
construction management and planning for large and small projects. They actively participates in
research and development within the fields of structural technology, material technology and software
development. The staff is currently counting about 60 engineers.

Of special relevance for the project is the fact that Dr.techn.Olav Olsen has been involved as
conception designer for 50% of all submerged concrete structures within the offshore oil and gas
sector.
Kössler Ges mbH (KOS)

Role: Design and construction of the special developed hydro turbine for Wave Dragon.

Kössler is an Austrian based manufacturer of hydro turbines. Kössler Engineering Works was founded
in 1928, and has specialised in producing small and medium sized hydro turbines of the Kaplan,
Francis, and Pelton types. Kössler has 78 engineers and technicians employed, and possess its own
design and technical development office. Kössler has a strong reputation within Kaplan turbines, which
are specially suited for operation when head and flow is low and varying.

ESB International (ESBI)

Role: Power technology consultancy.

ESB International (Ireland) is an international engineering, contracting and management consultancy


organisation owned by the Irish Electricity Supply Board. It operates in the fields of power
engineering, power restructuring and reform, privatisation strategy, IPP development, structural and
infrastructural engineering, institutional strengthening of transmission and distribution, management
consultancy, project and construction management, power systems contracting, financial strategy
analysis and asset valuation, institutional development engineering.

ESB International will call in expertise from the offshore and electrical engineering departments for
some of the work tasks to be performed.

Balslev (BAL)

Role: Design and purchase of electrical, measurements, grid connection, and regulation systems.

Balslev A/S is a Danish based international orientated consulting engineering company, which employs
150 persons of which 120 are engineers and technicians. Balslev is one of the leading Danish
consulting companies within all kinds of electrical systems, and delivers complete solutions for the
construction, infrastructure, industry, and supply sectors.

Technical University Munich (TUM)

Role: Development and test of hydro turbines, control and regulation technology

Technical University Munich (TUM), Institute for Hydraulic Machinery and Plants will lead the turbine
design and the turbine performance tests, based on their previous work on low-head turbine design,
and also in the regulation strategy tests and in verification and calibration of the overtopping
mathematical model.

Aalborg University, Hydraulic and Coastal Laboratory (AAU)

Role: monitoring, hydraulic behaviour, overtopping, control and regulation strategy.


Aalborg University, Hydraulics and Coastal Engineering Laboratory, Department of Civil Engineering,
has for more than 25 years performed research related to wave loads on coastal structures, their
structural behaviour and their impact on the environment. Many types of protecting structures
including breakwaters have been studied in detail in two and three-dimensional physical models as
well as through field tests. Advanced models for wave propagation, sediment transport and spreading
pollution (CFD models) are developed and widely used within the laboratory. During the last four years
the field of wave energy has been growing in Denmark, and AAU has had a major involvement in
these activities. This has resulted in the development of a world-leading knowledge on design of naval
structures for optimal overtopping, and in mathematical modelling of overtopping on floating
structures.

Warsaw University of Technology (WUT)

Role: Power electronics

Warsaw University of Technology is represented by Institute of Control and Industrial Electronics that is
divided and has a main experience as follows:
• Control Division – research on: control theory, image processing, system approximation and real-
time system control.
• Industrial Electronics Division – research on: components and converters, control and signal pro-
cessing in power electronics, power electronics equipment.
• Electrical Drives Division – research on: electrical drives and its control, converters for drive applica-
tions, non-conventional systems of power generation and power conditioning.

University of Wales Swansea (UWS)

Role: Environmental impact, power electronics

University of Wales Swansea is represented by


• The School of Biological Sciences, dealing with Coastal & Marine Biodiversity, by prof. Peter Dyrynda,
PhD. Experience exist based on the Ecological Impacts of the Sea Empress Oil Spill.
• Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, department of Semiconductors, Sensors and
Simulation. The group comprises 27 full-time research and support staff and research students. The
main areas of study are: Semiconductor Device Modelling, Semiconductor Interfaces Laboratory,
Computational Electromagnetics and Power Electronics.

Role: Wave Dragon Wales Ltd will make available the Wave Dragon unit for use by the project.

Wave Dragon Wales Ltd is a newly established company owned 20% by Wave Dragon Ltd and 80% by
K P Renewable Plc. The company is established in Wales with the purpose of building a 7 MW wave
farm based on the Wave Dragon technology and offered to Wave Dragon ApS for disposal of this
project.
