CALIBRATION OF PRESSURE PAGE NO.: 2 of 3

GAUGE BY DEAD WEIGHT TESTER
1.0 PURPOSE:
To establish and maintain the documented procedures to ensure that the calibration is carried
out to get the desired results.
2.0 SCOPE:
This work instruction is describes the calibration techniques of pressure gauges using dead
weight tester.
3.0 RESPONSIBILITY:
Manager/Sr.Engineer / Officer (Lab) is responsible for the calibration and maintaining the
records of calibration in the specified formats.
4.0 CALIBRATION DATA:
Model no.: RAVIKA DW 23
Sr. No.: 97037
Range: 10 to 400 kg / cm2 in step of 2 kg/ cm2.
5.0 SETTING UP:
5.1 Place the tester on a strong rigid table in the instrument room. Direct ray of the sun should
be avoided. The instrument should not be near a furnace or in a hot area. Dust is very
harmful to the instrument.
5.2 Clean the instrument with a soft cloth, especially the top stepped region of the free piston.
Check the free movement of the free piston by moving it up and down by hand.
5.3 Install the following as shown in the illustration.
(i) Leveling screws with lock nuts and base pads.
(ii) Weight carrier on the free piston.
(iii) Screw pump handle rod with knobs.
(iv) Valve wheels.
5.4 Place a sprit level on the weight carrier and adjust by means of the leveling screws and lock
the leveling screws by tightening lock nuts on to the legs.
6.0 OPERATING INSTRUCTION:
6.1 PRIMING:
Pour a clean mineral oil in the oil reservoir to the top of the hexagon portion of the stand
pipe SAE-30 (or 40) heavy duty engine oil of suitable brand and restart seepage past the free
pistons to a reasonable level. If the instrument is being used under extreme ambient
temperatures, appropriate viscosity oil may be used.
6.1.1 Open all valves.
6.1.2 Turn screws pump handle clockwise fully.
6.1.3 Operate priming pump lever several times and watch the oil spouting out of the standpipe
until no bubbles are seen in the return oil and full flow is established.
6.2
6.2.1 Continue operating priming pump and at the same time turn screw pump handle
anticlockwise slowly to fill up the screw pump.
6.2.2 Remove blacking plug from the union connector and give a few strokes or priming pump until
oil shows in the union connector.

Install pressure gauge to be tested on the union connector. Use adapter if necessary. Please
ensure that gauge and adapter are seating property are tightened well and the assembly as
6.2.3
rigid.
6.2.4 Check that the tester is properly leveled. We can now proceed with the testing of the pressure
gauge.
6.2.5 Dirty and chemically contaminated gauges must first be cleaned before testing. The threads
must be properly fitting. Datum level of the tester is at the union connector seating.
7.0 TESTING OF PRESSURE GAUGE:
7.1 Check that priming and released valve are open.
7.2 Give a few strokes of the priming pump to ensure that there is no air entrapped in the release
valve.
7.3 Before starting the calibration of pressure gauge ensure that all air removed by taping with
finger.
7.4 Close release valve.
7.5 Give a few more strokes of the priming pump to build up a suitable priming pressure in the
system, which may show on the gauge.
7.6 Close priming valve the priming pump is now cut-off from the circuit.
7.7 Place the necessary weight (or weights) on the weight carrier so that the sum of the pressure
valve of the carrier and weights loaded is equal to the first reading to be taken.
7.7.1 Slowly turn screw pump, clockwise. This will build up pressure in the circuit, which offer a
few turns will show on the pressure gauge.
7.7.2 Rotate the weights with carrier by hand to reduce the effect of friction in the free position.
Continue to increase the pressure and also to rotate the weights until the free piston where the
first ½” portion is until the free piston can rise a ¼” more before the internal lock stop further
movement.
It will be evident that the free piston is free from constraint and is floating on the oil pressure if
(i) It has risen.
(ii) Is any where within the first ½” stepped region, and
(iii) Is rotating as explained above.

7.7.3 Tap the gauge by a finger to eliminate the friction in the gauge mechanism and take the reading
on it. Write it down against the sum of the carrier and weight loaded.
7.7.4 Progressively load weight in the desired step on the weight carrier and take reading at each
point in the same manner as the first reading.
7.7.5 After the maximum reading has been taken reading for decreasing pressure at the same points
as before. Consider mean valve at each reading point.
7.7.6 Take a set of at least 5 readings to cover full range in increasing and decreasing order.
7.7.7 Any gauge found beyond the tolerance shall be scrapped.
8.0 DOCUMENTATION: record the test results in calibration report (WGSRL/QA/015) &
maintain history card (WGSRL/Q/014).
