theoretical approaches to literature; presentation of final essay; interactive class discussions
and weekly journal entries based on personal experiences pertinent to the literary
discussions.
Shakespeare: Focuses on Shakespeare’s classic pieces of drama which reflect the crucial role of
nature and supernatural phenomenons in plays: Hamlet, All’s Well that Ends Well, Antony &
Cleopatra, Winter’s Tale, King Lear and Cymbeline.
Projects: Inclusive of a scholarly research paper based on the aspects of nature manifested
in one of the Shakespearean plays discussed in class and weekly one-page assignments on
the specific role of nature or a prominent issue highlighted within each play discussed.
African-American Literature: Focuses on the prevailing issues of racial discrimination, social/
political injustice, and black oppression rampant during the Civil War and Reconstruction period
and covers the historical significance of the Haarlem Renaissance.
Projects: Daily mini-pop quizzes on the reading assigned for the class-period; six-page
close-reading paper; a 12- to 15-page final research paper; and an end-of-semester open-
note essay.
Approaches to Literary Studies: Focuses on the various theoretical approaches to literature – Post-
Modernism, Derrida’s Deconstruction, Reader-Response Theory, Feminism, Post-Colonialism,
and Freud’s and Jung’s theories of Psychoanalysis, Marxism, and Eco-Criticism
Projects: Four- to six-page close-reading paper on Nathaniel Hawthorne’s ambiguous short
stories; annotated bibliography on eight to ten resources utilized for the final research
paper; two Path-Finder assignments based upon research methods and processes of
utilizing a library database; and a 14- to 16-page research paper based on the principles of
a literary theory applied to a literary work discussed in class.
