PROCEDURE MANUAL PAGE : 1 OF 3
REVISION : 00
PROCEDURE FOR GUIDED BEND TEST
DATE : 01.02.2013

1.0 Purpose:
To establish and maintain documented procedures to ensure that the Guided Bend Testing is
carried out as per the applicable specifications / standards.

2.0 Scope:
This procedure is intended to determine ductility of weld of welded pipes & Structure

3.0 Responsibility:
Head QA/C shall be responsible for carrying out & evaluation of testing.

4.0 Applicable Code & Testing Frequency:

IS: 3589, IS: 2062, (Latest Edition)/ ASTM A 370 (Latest Edition) / Customer Spec.

5.0 Sample Orientation:

One root & one face bend specimen shall be taken from the Welded pipes at 90° to the weld seam
keeping the weld at the center of the specimen.

6.0 Preparation Of Test Sample:

6.1 The specimen shall be machined on both edges to get the specified width. The specimen shall
be prepared as shown in Fig. 1
6.2 The Weld reinforcement shall be removed from both the side and the surface shall be ground
off well & It shall represent the actual thickness of the pipe from which they were cut. The
sharp corners shall be filed.
6.3 Samples shall be etched to reveal the weld zone and the center of the weld shall be marked.

7.0 Equipment Used:

7.1 Universal Testing Machine (UTM):
Make : Blue Star
Capacity : 100 Tones
Cal. Frequency : Once in a year

7.2 Equipment Details:

The bend test shall be carried out in testing machine or presses equipped with the following
devices (See fig No.1)
7.2.1 Adjustable testing machines
7.2.2 Bending device with two supports and a mandrel for applying the bending force
directly at the mid-length.

PROCEDURE FOR GUIDED BEND TEST
DATE : 01.02.2013

8.0 Dimensional parameter as per ASTM:-

Full-wall thickness curved - Section test pieces are mandatory for wall thickness
≤ 20 mm & width more than 38 mm. (See fig No.2)

9.0 Method:
9.1 The maximum mandrel diameter shall be calculated using the following formula or as per
Customer Specification.
1.15 ( D – 2t )
A= --------------------- t
e D /t – 2e – 1
Where e = Strain
D = Outside Diameter (mm) & t = Thickness of the sample (mm)
Other diameter mandrels less than calculated diameter may be used.
9.2 Place the specimen on the bottom roller with weld at the center. The centerline of the jig should
match the centerline of the weld portion. Specimen shall be bent approximately 180° at room
temperature.
9.3 One test specimen shall have the root of the weld directly in contact with the mandrel. The
other test specimen shall have the face of weld directly in contact with the mandrel.
9.4 The speed of bending is ordinarily not an important factor.
10.0 Invalidation Of Tests:
Any test specimen that shows defective preparation or material imperfections unrelated to the intent
of the test, whether observed before or after bending, may be discarded and replacements shall be
considered as original specimens.
11.0 Acceptance Criteria:
As per API (Latest Edition) / Client’s Specification
12.0 Retest :
As per API (Latest Edition) / Client’s Specification
13.0 Records:
Following results of testing shall record on format
13.1 A reference international standard
13.2 Identification of the test pieces
13.3 Angle of Bend and Mandrel diameter
13.4 Test Method
13.5 Name and designation of testing & approving personnel
