Stone Spring Music Night Ideas with Ryan
Grade level: Kindergarten
Core Standard: Perceive and analyze artistic work
Artistic work: Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf
Analyze: The different characters and their instruments
Our basic idea for a facilitated experience at Stone Spring Elementary School is tailored
for Kindergarten students and will meet National Core Art Standard #7: Perceive and analyze
artistic work. The artistic work we are going to analyze is Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf. The
goal is for our students to be able to identify the different characters and the instruments
associated with them. Our experience will involve listening, moving, mixing, and matching.
Details are still to be hashed out, but the basic idea is that the student will either move
themselves to the character/instrument they think their hearing or move a picture that
represents the character/instrument they’re hearing. We want this to be as movement based
as possible so that our students can be as engaged as possible.

1.I wonder, particularly given the diversity of this crowd,
if there might be something that would connect more
meaningfully with the populations you’re going to be
engaging.
2.On a similar note, this is a fairly ubiquitous lesson in
elementary general music circles. It may be possible that
kindergarteners have already some exposure to this piece
and it might seem repetitious to them. That’s certainly
something you could ask Mrs. Eberly about.

perception here; however, I’m less “sold” on the “analyze”
part of the standard. How might students engage in
analyzing at a developmentally appropriate level?

plan to incorporate movement in this lesson, in that the
outcomes seem fairly passive/recall-oriented. You might
continue to toy with ideas about how to make the activity
you design more engaging for students—AND think about
what might be on the back page of your handout for
parents/students to engage with this standard after they
leave the Stone Spring Music Night event.
