SOME REFERENCE
PROJECTS
Light Rail
Bordeaux
The network
In 1996 Bordeaux (660,000 inhabitants) decided to organise its transport
network around three (and soon four) tramway lines. The first tram line
was commissioned in December 2003 and by the end of the second phase
in 2008, the network comprised:
• 3 lines covering a total of 43.5 km,
• 70 low-floor Citadis trams equipped with pantograph devices for collecting
the electric current from overhead lines and rails,
• A Central Control and 2 garages/engineering workshops.
The Bordeaux tramway used a ground level power supply for the first time in
the city centre as well as in other urban areas. It was felt that overhead power
cables would be unsightly in the historic parts of the city, so around 11km of
track was equipped with a third rail. A safety system ensures that only part of
the rail under the tramway is electrified.

Metro
Dubai
The Network
The Dubai network is the United Arab Emirate’s technological showcase and
started out with 2 fully automated and driverless lines - the Red Line and the
Green Line. The trains running on these lines are 85 m long, 2.78 m wide and
air-conditioned. By 2020, a total of 1.85 million passengers are expected to
use the network every day. Other lines will be added to this initial network as
well as light transport systems (monorail, tramway). SYSTRA is involved in all
these projects.

Metro
Santiago
The Network
In 2003 the Santiago network had three tyre wheeled metro lines (Lines 1, 2
and 5) covering approximately 40 km of track in total. The operator and
network manager, METRO SA, decided to implement an ambitious pro-
gramme to double the size of the network within four years. The programme
involved extending Lines 2 and 5 (in 5 consecutive phases) and the creation
of a new 44 km steel-wheeled metro line – Line 4. SYSTRA carried out the
basic engineering work, followed up on studies, manufacturing, installation
work and testing until the extensions of Lines 2 and 5 and the new built
Line 4, were all commissioned in record time in November 2005. In terms of
civil engineering, SYSTRA also carried out design studies and monitored
construction work for the viaduct on Line 4.
The major challenge for the project was to partially commission new parts of
the service in succession without interrupting existing services (9 new ser-
vices were commissioned over a three year period).
