repeated everyday UAT WE FIs A Beowulf Breakdown ee es al) A Literacy Circle Guide ‘The Information sheet The Assignment- Critically read, discuss, and synthesize the epic poem, “Beowulf” in preparation to produce a comps concerning both “Beowulf” and the novel Grendel, To do so, your collaborative groups will act as a literacy circle, wherein select roles and corresponding responsibilities, will assist you in producing a thoughtful reading and synthesis of the “Beowult”. Thi is an in-class assignment; ALL of the work (with exception of the critical reading) will take place in class and will have a deadline that falls within your respective class period, Directions: 1 Choose a cole Discussion Leader. Your job is to develop a list of questions you think your group should discuss about the assigned section of the book. Use your knowledge of levels of questions to create thought-provoking literal, interpretive, and universal questions. Try to create questions that encourage your group to consider ‘many ideas’ Help your group explore these important ideas and share their reactions. You will be in charge of leading the day's discussion. Diction Detective. ‘Your job is the careful examination of the diction (word choice) inthe assigned section, Search for words, phrases, and passages that are especially descriptive, powerful, funny, thought-provoking, suprising, or even confusing. List the words or phrases and explain why you selected them. Then, ‘write your thoughts about way the author might have selected these words or phrases. What isthe author trying to say? How does the diction help the author achieve his or her purpose? What tone do the words indicate? Bridge Builder ‘Your job isto build bridges between the events of the book and other people, places, or events in school, the community, oF your own life. Look for connections between the text, yourself, other texts, and the world. Also, make connections between what has happened before and what might happen as the narrative continues. Look for the characters’ internal and external conflicts and the ‘ways that these confliets influence their actions. Reporter. ‘Your job isto identify and report on the key points of the reading assignment, Make list or write ‘a summary that describes how the writer develops the getting, plot, and characters in this section ‘of the book. Consider how characters interact, major events that occur, and shifts in the setting or ‘the mood that seem significant Share your report atthe beginning of the group meeting to help your group focus on the key ideas presented in the reading. Like that of a newspaper reporter, your report must be concise, yet thorough. 2: Critical Reading/3As- Each night, I wil assign you a section of the texto critically read and annotate (3s). To that end, you will be required to assume a different role every class period. For those grouping that have three people, one of you ‘will must complete two assignments, unit 2, SM eeeseeeeceeree ATTACKING GRENDEL A Literacy Circle Assignment Overview ‘The theme of this course is “there is always another perspective;” to that end, our course readings will always represent perspective from at least two sides. We have just completed the epic “Beowulf” and will now critically read and analyze the novel Grendel, which is written to inform us of Grendel's perspective of the events that transpired in the original epic. To do so, you will work within your assigned collaborative ‘group, (literacy circle) to discuss interpretations and synthesize this novel. Directions You will be required to independent critically read (attack), analyze, and annotate the novel. You will be required to contribute to the academic conversation within your literacy circle. And you must help your group complete the critical analysis question per chapter)as well as the astrology assignment sheet, > The Reating : - “ * You will be assigned nightly reading in chapter increments. You are expected to complete the 3s for each reading assignment. Nete: Your novel is subject to a random binder check, so bring it every day. ‘+ Individually, you must prepare four questions concerning each nightly reading assignment. The questions you draft must be examples of analysis and synthesis (see Blooms Taxonomy Question Stems resource). These questions will be a part of a compiled list of questions from your literacy circle (see “Attacking Grendel Assignment Sheet"). You will be required to articulate your synthesis and evaluation of the novels orally in daily student-led class discussions. Specifically, I will be assessing two criteria: participation and preparedness: ‘+ Prepmedves- You must initiate one conversation on a specified literary focus; I will provide the focus prior to your conversation day. Your objectives for this conversation include, a focused and specific topic, an offering of textual support, itis reflective, and organized. © Particpaten- I will assess your ability to participate in an academic conversation. Your job will be offer insight, interpretation, and depth in the conversation. > Analyzing the Text Your literacy circle must complete a series of critical reading and synthetic questions. ‘These questions are either chapter-based or thematic. To do so, you must first decide the group ‘member that will act as the Reporter for the day. This person is responsible for typing responses to ‘the questions posed per chapter. The Reporter may access the queries on Canvas when prompted. Hote; the responses ate a result of a collaborative consensus; re one person is rexprable for the ett soup.
