B. Summary
This study was conducted to be able to see the different approaches for reducing breast
cancer risk. These approaches include lifestyle modification which involves the reduction of fat
consumption and increasing your fruit and vegetable consumption with proper exercise. This
approach has a variety of health benefits with few associated risks and is always appropriate for
all women regardless of breast cancer risk. Second is chemoprevention which are pharmacologic
intervention to reverse, suppress or inhibit carcinogenic progression to invasive cancer. This
chemoprevention encompass numerous selective Estrogen-Receptor modifiers (ER modifiers)
and aromatase inhibitors as the primary prevention setting for breast cancer. And lastly we have
the prophylactic surgeries including the Bilateral Salping-oophorectomy (BSO) and the Bilateral
Prophylactic Mastectomy (BPM) however these surgeries introduces significant additional risk of
its own and is generally reserved only for the highest risk women.
C. Reaction
Considering that my patient’s case is Breast Cancer and it is the most common cancer and the
second most common cause of death from cancer in women, it is logical to try to find ways to
decrease the risk of developing breast cancer. Lifestyle changes are shown to be important in the
prevention of breast cancer. Diet, physical activity, smoking, alcohol use, and vitamin and
mineral use are key factors influencing the risk of breast cancer among women. In women with
a confirmed breast cancer diagnosis who are under radiotherapy treatment after undergoing a
mastectomy, lifestyle changes are still very important. Some factors, such as smoking cessation
and prevention of weight gain, may improve the long-term survival chances of these patients.
However as for the case of my patient since it is already terminal stage we should already allow
her or give her the opportunity to eat whatever she wants and provide her the hospice care she
deserves.
This research is relevant to my area of rotation (Community Duty) since I am currently handling a
breast cancer patient and I have been exposed to how difficult it is to have cancer it is important
that as early as now I emphasize different methods to prevent cancer so that we avoid and we
avert people from experiencing cancer.
One learning insight from this journal is, it is indeed true that prevention is better than cure. As a
health provider we must ensure that we emphasize to our clients that it is better that we
prevent diseases before it happens hence also preventing so much pain or stress when handling
or experiencing this diseases.
