Winter semester 2018/2019

Exercise 7
Discussion: December 13 & 14, 2018

1 Concave CA [20]
Sketch the positions of the red and blue foci that you expect due to chromatic aberration
in a concave lens.

2 Backwards lenses [25]

Consider a plano-convex lens inserted backwards into a collimated beam (i.e., planar side
toward the collimated side).

2.1 CA in theory [15]

Derive an expression for the axial chromatic aberration as a function of nL(red) and
nL(blue) and R2 .

2.2 CA in numbers [10]

Using the standard wavelengths for red and blue, calculate and compare numerical values
for axial CA using BK7 and LaSFN9 glasses for a lens with R2 = −50 mm. (Yes, you have
to nd the dispersion data yourself. The glass designations are for Schott material...)

3 Flat microlenses [30]
You would like to fabricate a microlens with f = 500 µm and a diameter of r = 100 µm
optimized for red light (λ = 656 nm). You have two technologies available, as shown in
the gure. Both are fabricated on a BK7 glass substrate, whereby lens (a) is made from
photoresist (n = 1.6) and lens (b) from BK7 itself.

3.1 Photoresist lens [10]

Calculate the required lens radius of curvature and the sag height for the photoresist
lens.

3.2 BK7 lens [10]

Calculate the required lens radius of curvature and the sag height for the BK7 lens.

3.3 Blue lens [5]

For the BK7 microlens given in the previous problem, repeat the design for blue rather
than red illumination. You know that, for BK7, n = 1.52283 for λ = 486 nm and
n = 1.51432 for λ = 656 nm.

3.4 Aberrations [5]

For the BK7 lens, determine the chromatic aberration.

4 Dual microlenses I [25]
Consider the dual-sided microlens structure shown in the gure below. Assume that the
lenses, with radii of curvature R1 = 0.5 mm and R2 = −0.3 mm, are made from the
same material as the substrate but are thin lenses (i.e., thickness zero). The substrate,
with a thickness t = 3 mm, has nL = 1.5. The black structure near the middle of the
substrate is an opaque stop.

4.1 Thick image [20]

What is the position of the image created due to an object positioned 10 mm to the left
of the lens system?

4.2 Let's stop [5]

What is the function of the stop? (Tip: where is the intermediate image generated inside
the lens?)
