Bunnicula Vocabulary Lesson Plan

Mrs. Cavanaugh’s 3rd Grade Vocabulary Lesson

Bunnicula Edition

Chapter 1 - 2

Objective: ​To have students grasp an understanding of the vocabulary list, both in the spelling of
the words as well as their meaning.

Materials Needed: ​Bunnicula Book (being read in class), Prezi Presentation (teacher created),
paper & pencils (students should have), Vocabulary Word Notecards, Vocabulary Word
Definition Notecards, (for game, teacher created).

Lesson Summary: ​Read chapter 1 and 2 of “Bunnicula” in class. Once this is complete the rest
of lesson should span 1 week to prepare them for their vocabulary test.
Part 1: ​Read Chapter 1 of “Bunnicula”
- Class Discussion: What stood out about the chapter? What do we
remember? Are there any words you did not understand?
- Students are informed before each chapter to try to listen and make notes
on things they think are important or words they feel really stand out.
Part 2: ​Read Chapter 2 of “Bunnicula”
- Class Discussion: What stood out about the chapter? What do we
remember? Are there any words you did not understand?

Part 3: ​Small Group Assignment (1 class period): ​Students will be put into small groups, where
they will look up the vocabulary list (written on the board) and write down the sentences in the
book that contain the word. (they will cite the page). Halfway through the period there will be a
class discussion about the words and if we can figure out their meaning based on the sentences.

Part 4: ​Class Presentation. (1 class period). ​: Students will follow along with a teacher made
presentation, copying down the definitions of the vocabulary words and participating in
prompted class discussions.

Part 5: ​Practice Spelling Test. (Beginning of class period). ​: Students will be given an oral
practice spelling test, and will write down the words spoken. They will listen to the given
definitions and example sentences. Once finished there will be time to go over the spelling test
and for in class practice with spelling and definitions.

Part 6: ​Class Activity. (1 class period.) :​ Students will be sorted into small groups and be able to
participate in a matching game. There will be cards with the vocabulary words on them, and
there will be cards with definitions on them. Jeopardy style, teams will attempt to match words
with their proper definitions.

Part 7: ​Spelling and Definition Test Final. (To Completion). :​ Students will be given the
vocabulary words orally, and write them down. Once completed they will be given the rest of the
period to attempt to write down the definitions to each word on the back of the paper. It will be
turned in for a final grade.
