Course Outline
College: Technological Studies
Department: Electrical Engineering Technology
Program: Electrical Machines Technology
Pre-requisite: 70-110
Co-requisite: None
Language: English
Course Description:
This course describes the principle of power electronics, its switching nature, the
characteristics of different switching devices such as power diode, bipolar junction
transistor, and thyristor. It also contains the basic types of converter topologies such as ac-
dc rectifiers, dc-dc choppers, dc-ac inverters, and ac-ac voltage controllers. The study of
these converters includes; circuit topology, circuit waveforms, principle of operation,
performance parameters, methods of control, and applications.
Course Goals:
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
1- Identify the different types of power semiconductor switching devices.
2- Deal with different types of power electronics converters’ topologies.
3- Experience the characteristics, performance parameters, and applications of
different types of power electronics converters’ topologies.
