the impact of globalisation on poverty.

- and Political engagement
Martin Ravillion

- And previously had been director of the research
department at the world bank.

developing countries and on policies for fighting
poverty.

trade openness and poverty.l
Bardhan
- Emphasises the complex and context-dependent nature
of the openness-poverty relationships by examining the
various processes.
- Greater international integration operates on the rural
poor through four causal mechanisms in their capacity
as;
1. Workers
2. Consumers
3. Recipient of public services
4. Uses of common resources
- Bardhan argues that opening up the product markets
internationally without doing anything about the weak
and distorted factor markets or poor infrastructural
services may be sub-optimal policy for the poor.
Jenkins
- Focuses his analysis on the impact of integration of the
global economy on the poor in their role of as
producers.
- Jenkins shows how gains from globalisation are likely
to be more widely distributed.
- A strategy of linkages between the export sector and
domestic production has been more effective in
creating employment and reducing poverty than trade
liberalisation.
