94‘TRANSLATOR'S NOTE
Tue original edition of this book was published in Paris in
1946. This translation incorporates many alterations and addi-
tions made by the author. Some concern the text but most are
to be found in the notes and bibliography and are intended to
take account of work published since 1946.
While this version was being prepared the latest addition to
the list appeared — Epicurus and his PI ily by N. W. DeWitt
(University of Minnesota Press, 1954). Fr. Festugitre wishes me
to acknowledge his indcbtedness to this book for some altera~
tions in the details of Epicurus’ early life which have been made
in Chapter 1.
I am responsible for the index and list of abbreviations.
