INTERNATIONAL COLLEGE OF THE CAYMAN ISLANDS COURSE SYLLABUS

The mission of the International College of the Cayman Islands (ICCI) is to prepare students for career

Course Title: Special Topics: Seminar on Travel and Tourism


Course Number: BE 444A

This course provides business and non-business majors with the skills
Course Description: necessary to succeed as an entrepreneur. The fundamentals of starting
and operating a business, developing a business plan, obtaining financing,
marketing a product or service and developing an effective accounting
system will be covered.

Prerequisite(s) EN 101, 102 and SO 201

2. Pre-departure Discussion Post

For this Discussion Post, kindly answer the following questions:


 Share what excursion/meeting/activity you would be interested in doing during your trip and why.
 What do you consider to be the biggest challenge affecting young entrepreneurs in the Cayman Islands?
 Identify one new student in the group whom you have met for the first time (or seen but did not speak with
before) and one interesting thing about that person.

Your post is due Monday, October 22, 2018 at 11:59 p.m. and must be at most 300 words. Kindly post to Populi and
add to E-Portfolio.

3. Business Selection Video Presentation

Now that you have selected your business in your groups, please prepare a five slide PowerPoint Presentation telling
the class what your topic selection is and why you have chosen that business.

You will present this video at our Pre-departure meeting on Sunday, October 28th at 3:00 p.m. This should also be
posted on Populi and added to the E-Portfolio.
Interview Assignment (2)

You should interview at least two entrepreneurs; one from the Cayman Islands and one from Atlanta. In your
video clip, ensure that the following details are captured:
- His or her name, name of business, and type of business (i.e. sole proprietorship, limited partnership etc.)
- The process involved in becoming an entrepreneur (use his or her own experiences)
- Financing strategies used for the business
- Marketing and promotional tools used for the business
- Benefits/challenges of owning your own business (use his or her own experiences) in that country.

Community Outreach Assignment (1)

You will be advised of the actual Community Outreach Activity by your instructors. From the activity, you should create
a short video clip (max. 5 minutes) featuring you doing your part in the activity, and sharing the following details:
 what you learnt from this activity
 why is this important to engage in the community as an entrepreneur?
 how would you encourage/support your employees in being socially responsible?

Field Trip Reflections (5)

You will be required to make oral reflections on excursion days: Sunday, Nov. 11th to Thursday, Nov. 15thklnk,. In
your response, you should answer the following questions:

1, What was the highlight of the day’s activities/trips?


2. How can you apply what you experienced today with the course in general?
3. Is there any particular topic that you can make reference to base on your experiences today?

You will present at the end of each day’s excursion.

E-Portfolio

This is the grade for the overall e-Portfolio. The e-Portfolio is not due until the December 9, 2018, but there are some
of the items which will have an earlier due date on Populi.

Here is a model of the sections of your final e-Portfolio that you will be submitting on December 9, 2018.

INTRODUCTION

INTERVIEW
- Upload your interview videos here along with instructions given and a summary of both interviews. Also, include the
business cards of these entrepreneurs.

- Upload your video here along with at least 10 photos of the activity.

BUSINESS PLAN REPORT


- Upload your PPT/PREZI Presentation here along with some of the positive and negative aspects of creating this report
and working in your team.

BUSINESS PLAN GROUP PRESENTATION


- Upload your Business Plan Group Presentation here along with photos of the team and working as a team to
complete the assignment.

This will be due on Monday, December 9, 2018.

Team Quiz

You will participate in a team quiz competition that will cover all 14 chapters of the book. The date of this competition
will be announced in advance. This means that YOU MUST READ THE ENTIRE BOOK.
INTERNATIONAL COLLEGE OF THE CAYMAN ISLANDS: TEST POLICY

1. When students arrive for an in class exam all materials not to be used in their exam must be left
at the front of the room. If the exam is closed book the only materials the student should have
at their desk are their pen, blank paper and calculator, if calculators are permitted. Instructors
should review all blank papers to insure no impermissible items are present. Students are
encouraged not to bring personal items to the room on test days.
2. If students are permitted to use their text book or other items on the exam they must check
with the instructor first so the instructor can confirm they do not have any impermissible items
in their text.
3. All cell phones, blackberries or other communication items must be turned off and stored in
their belongings at the front of the room. Students may not use their cell phone, blackberry or
other communication device as a calculator. Students are encouraged not to bring their cell
phones, blackberries etc. to class on exam days.
4. Students are not permitted to speak to each other or communicate in any way whether verbally
or in writing once the exam is passed out and any communication during the exam will be
considered as inappropriate.
5. Students may not share textbooks (if exam is open book) or notes (if notes are permitted for
use) during an exam or share calculators if they are permitted.
6. It takes two to cheat and anyone who is caught taking answers or giving answers is equally
guilty. In addition, anyone who witnesses cheating and does not report it is guilty of cheating.

Any student caught cheating on an exam will be given a zero for that exam. If a second
instance occurs then the student will fail the course. All allegations of cheating will be
reviewed by the Office of the Director of Academic Affairs.
