You know that statistic about liquor stores, where 90% of their sales are to a really
small percentage of the population? Basically their money is made almost entirely to
alcoholics, people doing their biannual restocking of the liquor cabinet are a drop in the

I wonder if fast food is similar. Like most people they sell to go there constantly, and

Probably partly that and their are certain "staple" sauces. I mean BBQ, Honey
Mustard, and one or two others you are going to find anywhere that does them.
Even if you don't know they have certain other ones it's Fast Food and most will
rattle off one they expect there to be so they can get through quick. Have a list and

electric currents create magnetic fields. Particles have a property called magnetic
moment that interacts with field.
permalink embed save parent report reply
What makes magnets magnets and everything else not magnets. Are some things
more magnets than other things?
permalink embed save parent report reply
The short story is that every atom is actually a tiny magnet and the magnetic-
ness is a property of the atom. Most things have super disorganized particles so
they all effectively cancel each other out. In something like a chunk of
crystalized iron, you can get a lot of particles to line up their magnetic moment
and their combined efforts make a big powerful field.

Someone ahead of them wasn't up to speed when merging on to the road, someone
was tailgaiting and using their brake lights excessively, someone changed lanes,
there was a curve in the road.
A lot of things can easily be amplified if there are enough vehicles. Everyone is going
to slow down a little bit more than the car in front of them during heavy traffic.
permalink embed save parent report reply
People who brake for no reason or tailgate so much they have to brake continuously
to not hit the car in front deserve a special place in hell.

I am really curious about #2. How do you not understand a bank account? I can wrap
my head around not understanding investing, but what about a bank account gave you
trouble?
permalink embed save parent report reply
Back then, it was planned that I would have a bank account just before adulthood
because my parents thought they would be keeping their deli business forever and
named me "private owner", a term which confuses me because they said the private
owner doesn't own anything and/or have to do anything and just receives money as
the business goes along. It was at this point I was told "I'll do the understanding for
you" by my parents and the banker. Not only does the bank account outlive the deli
business, which died, the part where I don't have to do anything wasn't accurate,
and someone does something where I have to upgrade it which is not possible
because my ID says I'm a kid, which I can't upgrade without certain records which
require the ID which I need the records for.
permalink embed save parent report reply
You understand that situation is much more specific and complicated than just
having a personal bank account, right? If you opened a checking account today,
you wouldn't have to deal with any of that kind of stuff.

FWIW, I'm a grown ass adult and I don't understand that shit either. I understand
you put money in it, there are different types and that sometimes there is thing
called "interest" where they give you money for free (not a lot, though..like $0.03
for every dollar or some shit) every so often for just having an account with their
bank. And that's about the extent of it.

For #1 here are some tips that might get you out for some social activities.
Look up things you are into or be open to trying to new things. Into video games
for instance, go to a local gamestore.
Consistency. You honestly won't make best friends off of a one time thing, so make
sure you at least make effort to keep going somewhere.
Socialize. Just because you are at a location doesn't mean it gives you an excuse
to lurk in the corner on your phone. Don't stand around and wait for people to
come to you, try and join in on the open conversations.

Don't be pushy. Let things happen naturally, and know when to ask. If you just
met someone don't try to force your way into seeing a movie or going to their
place with other friends.
Don't lay on the self deprecation/self shaming stuff. Telling everyone you're
depressed and that you suck at talking is going to turn into what they think about
you. You don't need to burst through the gate that life and everything is great, but
moderation on both ends. It's okay to mention you dislike your job, it is a social
topic. Might push people away if you say you wish you weren't born. So
moderation on them.
Be open to suggest things. A lot of people believe they're much worse at
socializing than they are, if you feel like you are getting along with someone ask if
they want to hang out. Something like a movie, playing some video games, or just
going out to a place you both enjoy. Once you start stepping away from the group
with them you'll slowly find the friendship forms itself.
"Hmhmhmm. This should be interesting."

For real. People that have “running a marathon” on their bucket list? No fucking thank
you.
permalink embed save parent report reply
I like running because it's cheap, easy, and convenient. I hate running the first mile. I
hate starting it. I hate everything about it. I hate the chatter in my head telling me all
the reasons I don't have to run.
And then I hit mile 2 and it's just me with no worries.
But time I finish mile 3 I'm feeling good mentally and physically. And the rest of my day
goes better. I feel better about myself. And improvement comes pretty easy.
But that's after years of running. At first I just wanted to run for 20 minutes for heart
health and get slim enough to see my feet when I look down. It took months to get to
the point where I could run 20 minutes without stopping or slowing to a walk. And
every. single. run. sucked. until I got there. Then it got easier and more fun.
But the first mile still sucks.

Electricity.
I've had it explained to me hundreds of times but I still don't know what the heck any of it
really is. People talk all the time about volts, amps, and watts and I'm still just as confused
as ever. All I know is bigger numbers = more pain when touched. I think.
permalink embed save report reply
There is a book called “there are no electrons”. Which describes the flow of electricity as
little green men being attracted to the positive (party, girls, etc). It is a fun read.
Voltage is the desire to get to the party. Amps is how many green dudes are traveling
down the wire and resistance is how wide the road is and going from a freeway to a
single lane would increase resistance and the green men get angry which generates
heat. I thought the analogies were pretty good.
permalink embed save parent report reply
Hm. I highly recommend the NEETS modules published by the US Navy. Naval Electrical
Engineering Training Series.
A simplified way of understanding electricity is:
Think of electrons as water and wire as pipe.
Voltage = Pressure Amps = Flow Watts = Pressure multiplied by Flow over time.
Indicates the amount of work that can be done based on the pressure and flow of the
water within an amount of time.

What it is about collective activities such as big festivals, or concerts that people find
endaring. You're going to spend hundreds of euro to travel across the country, just to stand
in a big crowd and listen to songs which you've already heard with better quality? Why?
permalink embed save report reply
Because so often people feel they are supposed to be doing something purposeful and
productive with their lives and when they aren't, the enjoyment is tinted with a film of
shame that coats their contentedness. Watching a great movie? Maybe you should be
working out. Sleeping in? You should be answering emails and prepping for the week.
Taking a bubble bath? Mow your lawn.
Festivals are events where the entire point of them is to just be happy and indulge in
hedonism.
And there's something about letting go like that in a huge crowd of other people who
are all doing the same thing which is incredibly primal.

Ok, so I can't speak to concerts because that isn't really my thing. However, as someone
who's attended PAX (a video game convention) I can somewhat relate. There's just
something great about being surrounded by thousands, tens of thousands of people that
all have a passion for things you do. It's like being with a big crowd of friends you are
just meeting for the first time. There's an atmosphere about it. There's an energy that
you can soak in during these events that can be both exhausting and extremely fun.
permalink embed save parent report reply
As others have said, it's the sheer atmosphere. I'm a pretty introverted guy, I like my
alone time, but I've also done 2 big festivals (75k people attended) which lasted 4 days.
I enjoyed them with all of my heart, the music is amazing, you can feel it in the ground
underneath your feet, you can feel roar from the thousands of people around you,
people you feel connected with even though you've never met them.
And even when the acts aren't playing, you're sat around a campfire, making bacon
butties on a shitty portable bbq, chatting with your close friends and learning more
about them, even making new friends with the campers around you.
And sometimes girls take their tops off and it gets shown on the big screens by the
stage.

How someone can have faith in the ability of other drivers to understand the following:
If the light is red, you must stop. You can still turn right if the light is red, but only if you
stop first and there is no traffic coming from your left, or ahead of you turning left onto
the road you're about to turn right on. If the light is green, you may proceed, unless
you're turning left, in which case you need to turn left, and then you can turn left if
there's no one coming from ahead of you. But sometimes the green light is shaped like
an arrow, in which case you CAN go ahead and safely turn left. When the light is yellow,
you need to stop if you can. You may or may not be allowed to be in the intersection
when this happens, depending on what state you're in. Also always yield to pedestrians
from any number of different directions.
But not this:
If there is already traffic in the circle, then yield to that traffic. Otherwise you can enter

I’m non-binary myself, so I completely get wanting to use they.
But I don’t get the weirder ones than that, like ‘ze’ and stuff

i can not for the life of me understand the point of pointers and references in C
programming. they seem very vague to me for some reason.

This one is common. A pointer is merely an address. What that means is:
We have you. You are an object. We have your name. Your name is a pointer.
If I want someone to do something to you, I either hand them your body or your name.
If I hand them your body, they can start doing whatever they want directly to it. If I
hand them your name, they have to look you up and go find your body to start doing
things to it.
Simple?

Why isn't Mel Brooks listen in any of Adam Sandler's Hanukkah songs? If we're listing
famous Jewish people, he's gotta be the king...and it's good to be the king.
