Lesson: Color Theory Basics
Core Standards: Humanities and Visual Arts
 4-5.VA2.15- Identify elements in artwork and environments.
 4-5.VA.3.3.1- Experiment with different materials, techniques, and processes in the
visual arts.

Objectives
 Learn how different colors relate to each other by using the color wheel
 Identify primary, secondary and tertiary colors
 Identify complimentary colors
 Define basic color theory vocabulary
 Make secondary colors by mixing primary colors using finger paint

Supplies
 Paper plates
 Yellow, red and blue finger paint
 Paper towels (for hands and clean-up)

Tasks
 Slide 1: Introduction Slide (1 min)
o Student Involvement
 Ask students if they enjoy painting or drawing.
o Introduce lesson.
 Slide 2: Introduce the color wheel (1 minute)
o Student Involvement
 Ask students if they are familiar with the color wheel.
o Explain the color wheel.
 The color wheel is a circular chart that illustrates how colors are related to
each other.
o Explain hands-on activity.
 Slide 3: Primary Colors (2 minutes)
o Yellow, red and blue
o Student Involvement
 Ask students if they know why these colors are called primary colors.
 o Explain primary colors.
 Primary colors are used to create all other colors in existence.
 Slide 4: Secondary Colors (2 minutes)
o Student Involvement
 Ask students if they have ever made secondary colors by mixing primary
colors together.
o Explain what secondary colors are and how they are made.
 Green, orange and violet.
 Secondary colors are created by mixing two primary colors.
 Red + blue = violet
 Blue + yellow = green
 Red + yellow = orange
o Explain how mixing all primary colors together will create a neutral or brown.
 Slide 5: Tertiary Colors (2 minutes)
o Student Involvement
 Ask students if anyone can describe how color red-violet is created
 Tertiary colors are also known as intermediate colors.
 Tertiary colors and named for the colors used to create them.
 Red –violet can be made by mixing equal part of the color red and
the color violet.
o Explain tertiary colors.
 Yellow-orange, red-orange, red-violet, blue-violet, blue-green, and
yellow-green.
 Slide 6: Complimentary Colors (2 minutes)
o Explain complimentary colors.
 Complimentary colors are any two colors that are directly across from
each other on the color wheel.
 Yellow and violet, orange and blue, red and green.
 Slide 7: Warm and Cool Colors (2 minutes)
o Students participation
 Ask students if they knew that color has temperature.
o Explain warm and cool colors.
 Cool colors are usually associated with things that are cold.
 Warm colors are usually associated with things that are warm or hot.
o Point them out on the color wheel.
 Cool: red-violet, violet, blue violet, blue, blue-green and green.
 Warm: red, red-orange, orange, yellow-orange, yellow, and yellow-green.
 Slide 8: Color Vocabulary (2 minutes)
o Hue: another word for color.
o Intensity: the brightness or dullness of a color.
o Tint: the light or dark value of a color by mixing it with white.
o Shade: the dark value of a color by mixing it with black.
  Slide 9: “3 Primary Colors” video (2 minutes)
o Play brief video that explains primary colors.
 Slides 10-12: Hands- On Activity (5 minutes)
o Explain to students how to make secondary colors by mixing finger paints in
primary colors.
o Walk the students through each activity.
1. Start with primary color finger paints on a paper plate.
2. Mix yellow and blue to create green.
3. Mix yellow and red to create orange.
4. Mix red and blue to create violet.
5. On the center of the plate, mix a little of each primary color to create a
neutral.
 Written Assignment
o When hands-on activity is complete, students will need to complete a brief written
assignment.

Assessment
Students will be evaluated based on how well they:
 Participate in the lesson
 Following directions during hands-on activity
 Quiz
