Workshops

A. Long-Term Care Staff: A Program for Honouring Grief & Increasing Resiliency
Tara Cohen

We will explore a program that addresses the impact on staff of working with individuals and
families experiencing chronic illness, dying and death. Recognizing that grief is natural in the
workplace, we will honour the simultaneous joy and suffering that may be present. Central to
this discussion will be how to strengthen staff self-awareness and self-kindness; sustain
meaning in their work; and create compassionate and resilient teams.

B. Acute Deterioration – Team Collaboration & Care Conversations

Jennifer Reguindin

In the context of acute changes, the learning objectives of this session are to: 1) discuss factors
that surround conversations between staff and family members, 2) identify resources available
to staff in these circumstances, and 3) find ways to support communication and reflection
related to team collaboration and comfort care.

C. Family Fortune: A Serious Educational Game to Foster Engagement

Daniel Galessiere & Raquel Meyer

Family Fortune is a serious educational game that encourages staff to view families as valuable
to care planning, and in doing so, to create better care experiences and outcomes. Consistent
with relational care practices, when teams, families and residents work collaboratively,
individual and collective strengths are mobilized – both families’ knowledge of the resident and
their preferences in concert with staff clinical and skill-based expertise.
