Short Essay
MLA formatting is used primarily for humanities subjects. Subjects that would include
English and Literary studies. Compared to APA formatting which is used for science subjects such
as chemistry or psychology. MLA has certain characteristics such as: double spaced, 12 point and
Times New Roman font, header, and centered titles. These few characteristics are common to
APA, except one big difference is that APA requires a cover page and different citations on the
reference page. MLA also has specific requirements of putting in endnotes/ footnotes, quotations,
and how to cite both in text and on a reference page. MLA is the most common form of formatting
used in high school, while primarily English majors use MLA in college.
