Lesson aims:
- to practise speaking, listening, reading and writing skills
- to introduce new vocabulary items related to the geography and to the diversity of the anglo-
saxon cultural space

ANTICIPATED PROBLEMS: SS might find it difficult to speak about the topic, due to their low
level of general knowledge; some of them may find it difficult to understand the listening text and
solve the task related to it; some students may also find it difficult to ask questions in English, to
understand the text.

HOMEWORK CHECKING: 3 minutes


T checks homework- a project about famous people

ACTIVITY 1: Warm-up-Brainstorming
INTERACTION: T-S, S-T
ORGANISATION: Whole-class

OBJECTIVE : to increase the SS’ interest in the topic Australia
PROCEDURE:T writes the word Australia in the centre of the blackboard and elicits from SS all the
information they have about the topic. T writes some of the key words around that central word
(spidergram)
MATERIALS: blackboard

Anticipated problems: Some Ss may not be receptive to this activity due to their low level of general
knowledge.

ACTIVITY 2: Introduction of new lesson


Students (Ss) are shown the world map and are asked to show Australia on it (a blank map). After T
elicits the answer, T shows another map , but this time with the countries written on it and Australia is
shown on the map again, with the mention that it is in the Southern hemisphere. Then Romania is
shown on the map and it is mentioned that it lies in the Northern Hemisphere.
Then T shows Ss different pictures of the country and elicits answers regarding to what they represent
. After T hears the answers she presents each picture and writes the new vocabulary on the bb.

ACTIVITY 3: Listening activity


Ss are given a worksheet and are told that they are going to listen to eight facts about Australia, facts
about most of the pictures shown. They have to match each fact to the correct thing being described.
Before listening T reads the words in the second column and clarifies any unknown words (convicts;
immigrants). Ss listen to the text once, but they need to listen to it again.After they solve the task, T
checks the answers and gives feedback

ACTIVITY 4:PPT presentation of Australia


Students are shown a PPT about Australia- it contains important aspects of the country, and in order
to check understanding, T asks one-two questions for each slide.

OBJECTIVE 4: to introduce the detailed facts about Australia

ACTIVITY 5-Reading
T asks Ss to read the text in their textbooks-ex.2a/ page 44; They might notice the blanks in the text
and are asked to ignore them for now; while they perform the task, T writes any unknown words on
the bb (rank- a se clasa; inland- din interior; to lie- a se situa; to range=a se grupa; tiny= mic;
extinction=disparitie, exterminare; swan= lebada; reef- recif; coral polyp= polip de coral; settler=
colonist; nevertheless= totusi). Once they read the text and write down the words, ss are asked to
solve ex. 2B/45 in their textbooks. They have to fill in the blanks in the text (1-4) with the correct
sentence (a-d)

ACTIVITY 6: Question cards


T shows ss a set of cards and explains to them that they are questions related to the topic of the
lesson-Australia and then she goes around the class asking them to draw one, to read it aloud and to
give an answer; the other ss have to pay attention to provide an answer/ another answer or to produce
opininons.

ACTIVITY 7: Quiz contest

Ss are organised into groups of 4 and are assigned a colour. They have to write 4 quiz questions using
the text in their textbooks and the information on the worksheet. It’s important for them to read the
information on the worksheet as well. Each member of the group has to produce a quiz question with
3 choices, then they designate a spokesperson to read the questions, while the other groups have to
answer, by raising their hands. T gives them an example of such a quiz question.
