MASONRY SUPPORT SYSTEMS

The NEW AnconOptima™ System

AnconOptima is a standard masonry support
system. It comprises a two-step angle, with pre-
marked fixing zones, and a range of interchangeable
brackets to suit cavities from 60mm to 130mm.
Systems are available to support a masonry load of
up to 14kN and brackets are simply changed on site
to allow for cavity variations. For further information
see pages 7 to 9. The New AnconOptima™ System
Bracket Angle Support System
Ancon MDC Support Systems are designed and
manufactured to suit specific applications and have
been developed to carry up to three storeys of
external brickwork. By utilising a small support angle
and varying the depth of the welded back brackets,
the system provides an economical solution for
supporting the outer leaf of brickwork. The system
will usually fix to a channel cast into a concrete
edge beam, or bolt directly to a steel member.
For further information see pages 10 to 17.
MDC Bracket Angle Support System
Continuous Angle Support System
Ancon CFA Continuous Angle Support Systems
provide a simple solution for the support of external
masonry. These systems are mainly used for
supporting single storey brickwork with a small
cavity. Cold formed angles can be supplied in
lengths of up to 4 metres. Horizontal slots in the
vertical leg allow fixing to AnconLock toothed
channels cast into the concrete edge. For further
information see pages 18 to 19.

Individual Bracket Support System CFA Continuous Angle Support System

Ancon Individual Bracket Support Systems
provide great flexibility in design. These can be used
to support curved brickwork, arches and where the
soffit of a soldier course has to be seen to be
unsupported from below. Ancon LDBs will support
up to 4 metres and Ancon MDBs will support up to
8 metres of brickwork. For further information
see pages 20 and 21.

Stonework Support
The design for the support of stonework will
depend upon the type of stone, the size of the unit Individual Bracket Support System
and the type of structure. Stone cladding is often a
combination of large individually sized stones,
sometimes of varying thickness, and may include
cornice or other stones that stand out from the general
line of the cladding. Support for the stonework will
usually be positioned over the horizontal movement
joint at each floor level and over openings. The
support of cornice and other particularly large stones
will need special consideration. For further
information see pages 22 to 24.

Large differential movement

DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS

Brick or stone clad structures, will usually

necessitate the use of stainless steel support for the
masonry over horizontal movement joints. Differential
movement, corrosion resistance, type of cladding
and frame type, all need to be considered.
Support level
and movement
Differential Movement
joint
The maximum size of a masonry panel should be
restricted to limit the effects of differential movement.
This is particularly important if clay brickwork is used
with concrete blockwork and a concrete frame. The Support level

BS 5628 : Part 1 requires the outer leaf to be

joints are generally positioned at every storey or
every second storey. They are also incorporated in
many buildings of less than four storeys or 12 metres
in height.
Ties at 450mm horizontal centres
Support Detail
The support will be positioned directly over the Ancon Cavitray
horizontal movement joint. The joint will often
incorporate a compressible filler and should be of Support system
sufficient size to allow for expansion of the masonry
below. Damp-proofing is normally located at the Fixing to structure
support position. The Ancon Cavitray is the only
damp-proofing solution to work with a masonry Mastic pointing
support system. It is a pre-formed cavity tray
positioned directly on the masonry support angle and Compressible filler
creates a guaranteed plane of water expulsion. It
eliminates the problem of assembling a consistent Head restraint at 450mm centres
profile from roll dpc (see page 6 for more
information). Wall ties should be incorporated within
300mm above and below the support.

Corrosion Resistance
Typical Support Detail
Ancon Support Systems are manufactured from
grade 1.4301 (304) stainless steel and will be
suitable for most building applications. In particularly
corrosive environments, or where part of the support
will be visible, grade 1.4401 (316) should be
considered.
Bi-metallic corrosion may occur in a damp
environment where the stainless steel support
Mild steel
system is bolted to the structural steel frame. This will
not affect the stainless steel, but could slightly
increase the corrosion rate of the carbon steel. This
can be prevented by excluding moisture from the Isolation material
detail, or by isolating the two dissimilar metals.
Isolation patches are available from Ancon Building Stainless steel
Products for use with Ancon Support Systems.
Prevention of Bi-metallic Corrosion
Further information is given in our brochure, ‘The Use
4 of Stainless Steel in the Construction Industry’.
TOLERANCES

It is important to select the correct support

system to ensure that building tolerances can be
accommodated. Adjustment will be required in all
three planes.

Adjustment of MDC Support System Adjustment of AnconOptima
features a fixing zone providing a total of 50mm
horizontal adjustment allowing the system to be fixed
to pre-drilled holes rather than slots in steelwork and
eliminates clashes with reinforcing bars in concrete.
Subject to the type of fixing used, AnconOptima
brackets can be changed on site to suit variations
in the structural edge beam. Other systems
accommodate such variations by adding shims
between the system and the structure, or by
increasing the bearing of the brickwork. The

minimum two thirds of the width of the wall. The full
load of the wall is still carried by the support angle.
Refer to page 11 for further information.

Fixing Methods
There are various methods of fixing Ancon
Support Systems to the structure. Cast-in channels
with ‘T’ bolts or site drilled expansion bolts can be
used with concrete frames. For steel frames the

ANCON CAVITRAY

The Ancon Cavitray was developed by Ancon

Building Products in conjunction with Cavity Trays
of Yeovil. It is the only cavity tray to work with a
Masonry Support System and eliminates the
problems of assembling damp-proof membranes on
site. A consistent profile can be difficult to achieve
from roll dpc and it may sag, retaining water and
mortar droppings in the cavity.
Common site practice has been to position
damp-proof membranes one masonry course above
the support system. This position often proves
unsatisfactory as water becomes trapped between
the dpc and the waterproof compression joint,
leaving brickwork saturated and discoloured.
Use of the Ancon Cavitray controls project costs,
Roll dpc may sag, retaining water and mortar droppings in the cavity
provides consistent build quality and reduces
site wastage. Unlike site-fabricated damp-proof
membranes, cavity trays do not require to be built
into the inner leaf or sag unless supported.
The Ancon Cavitray is positioned directly on the
masonry support angle and creates a guaranteed
plane of water expulsion. It is pre-formed and
manufactured from strong, lightweight and virtually
puncture-proof polypropylene.
Available in lengths of 1.5 metres in three
standard profiles, the Ancon Cavitray suits cavities
from 50mm to 150mm. Its standard design can be
modified to suit specific requirements outside this
cavity range and to cope with special masonry
Weep Vent
features. The front step is easily formed on site, by
bending the cavity tray where it has been scored.
The Ancon Cavitray is supplied without this step
pre-formed to enable it to be used with conventional
bricks as well as pistol bricks. The Ancon Cavitray guarantees the plane of water expulsion

with the Ancon Cavitray. Stop Ends are positioned at
the end of a run to direct moisture towards the front
of the tray and prevent it discharging into the cavity.
Euroweep-vents are positioned at 900mm horizontal
centres within the perpendicular joints of masonry.
These vents provide an outlet drain to discharge
excess water from the tray and allow the cavity to
breathe.

ANCONOPTIMA™

AnconOptima
AnconOptima is a standard masonry support
system. It comprises a two-step angle, with pre-
marked zones, and a range of interchangeable
brackets to suit cavities from 60mm to 130mm.
Systems are available to support a masonry load of
up to 14kN and brackets are simply changed on site
to allow for cavity variations.

Standard Systems
Standard AnconOptima systems are available to
support masonry loads of up to 10kN, 12kN and
14kN. The performance is dependent on the length
and thickness of the angle, the fixing centres of the
brackets, and the type of fixing used.
Patent applied for

Adjustment
The Industry’s growing emphasis on speed of
construction, and the inability of welded bracket
support systems to provide sufficient adjustment on
site, led Ancon to develop the AnconOptima System.
It is more adjustable than other support systems;
brackets are changed on site to allow for variations in
the edge beam and are available to suit cavities from
60mm to 130mm in 5mm increments. Shims can be AnconOptima accommodates variations in the line of the edge beam
used for fine adjustments and should never need to
be more than 4mm thick.
The ability of welded bracket support systems to
accommodate variations in the line of the structure is
limited by the maximum thickness of shims, normally
12mm. Some additional adjustment will be possible
by varying the bearing of the brickwork on the
support angle but this will be very limited, particularly
where pistol bricks are used. Welded support
systems are unlikely to meet the typical tolerance
requirement of ± 20mm. With the ability to change
brackets on site, and subject to the type of fixing
used, AnconOptima meets this tolerance on cavities Standard brackets are available to suit cavities from 60mm to 130mm
from 80mm to 110mm.
If the system is to be fixed using expansion bolts,
the brackets can be moved to eliminate clashes
up to 60mm
between the bolts and reinforcing bar. The vertical adjustment
AnconOptima System features a fixing zone
providing a total of 50mm horizontal adjustment. This
also allows the system to be fixed to pre-drilled holes
rather than slots in steelwork. Vertical adjustment is
achieved in the usual way by the deep slot in the
back of the bracket allowing a total adjustment of up
to 60mm.
If the system is fixed to a horizontal Ancon

channel cast into the face of the concrete, this will
Adjustment of the AnconOptima System
provide the same continuous adjustment as a
standard Ancon MDC system.

Installation
Installation of the AnconOptima System provides
significant time savings over welded support
systems. The preferred technique of installers is to
level and fix two brackets and simply slide the angle
into position. This considerably reduces the time
Two brackets are fixed and the angle slides into position
spent tightening and loosening the fixing bolts of a
welded bracket system, in order to achieve a level
horizontal shelf. Where space limitations prevent the
angle from sliding, the brackets can be positioned on
the angle and conventionally fixed; the smaller
lengths of angle simplifying this method of installation.

Setting Out
Unlike bespoke systems, there is no time-
consuming setting out of individually referenced
components to a detailed layout drawing. The
smaller components of AnconOptima are also easier
to move around site, often without hiring crane time.

Brackets
Ancon stocks a range of brackets to suit cavities
from 60mm to 130mm in 5mm increments. There are Brackets are available to suit cavities from
60mm to 130mm in 5mm increments
two types of bracket to suit the two angle
thicknesses. Brackets designed for one angle
thickness do not interchange with those designed for
the other. Brackets for AnconOptima 10 will only fit
the 4mm angle of this system. Brackets suitable
for the 5mm angle will interchange between
AnconOptima 12 and AnconOptima 14.

Cutting on site
AnconOptima is not designed for specific
buildings and certain angles will therefore need to be
cut on site to suit the length required. Each angle
section must have at least two brackets.

Corners
Standard left-hand and right-hand corners are
available. Each corner section requires three
brackets in order to ensure the required performance
is achieved, and corner sections should never be cut
on site.

ANCON MDC BRACKET ANGLE

SUPPORT SYSTEM

Ancon MDC Bracket Angle Support Systems can

carry over 8 metres of brickwork and accommodate
any width of cavity from 40mm in its standard form.
The material content of these systems is optimised to
ensure the most economic solution is designed.

Design Variations
The Ancon MDC System can be supplied
in a variety of configurations to suit particular
applications and support special masonry features.
The size of the support angle can be varied to suit the
thickness and height of the masonry to be carried.
Bracket spacing, depth and height are all varied to
suit loadings, fixing position and cavity width. Standard MDC Support System MDC/P Support System

There are several variations of the standard MDC

System. MDC/P has the bracket projecting below the
structure, MDC/R has an inverted angle welded to
the bracket, and MDC/I is a specially inverted system
with the support angle at the top of the bracket.
These variations allow the support leg of the angle to
be positioned anywhere from the top of the bracket to
a position below the bottom of the bracket.
Soldier courses can be suspended from
MDC systems by using stirrups at 225mm centres.
The stirrups fit over the angle and stitching rods span
between the stirrups, supporting cored or holed bricks.

Adjustment
Adjustment is provided in every direction to allow
for tolerance in the structural frame. The serrated
and slotted face of the bracket allows a total vertical
adjustment of up to 60mm. Cast-in channel will
provide virtually unlimited horizontal adjustment;
slotted holes in a steel edge member will offer more
limited adjustment. Shims can be included between Cast-in
the bracket and the frame up to a maximum channel

Steel Frames
Ancon MDC Support Systems can be fixed
directly to uncased structural steel frames. The fixing
positions can usually be at constant centres to
simplify the fabrication of the steelwork.
For cavities larger than 75mm there may be a
requirement for additional fixings near external
corners. Horizontal slots should always be
provided in the steel edge beam stiffeners to
allow lateral tolerance.
The structural edge member must be designed
to minimise deflections and accommodate the
torsional forces created by the eccentric load from
the brickwork, if excessive movement of the support
system is to be avoided.

As an alternative for higher loading conditions
the Ancon MDC/TC Top Cleat System can be
employed to fix directly onto the top of the composite
deck using expansion bolts.

Bi-metallic Contact
Corrosion of the steel frame may be slightly
increased where there is direct contact with stainless
steel in a damp environment. This will not affect the
stainless steel and can be avoided by isolating the
two dissimilar metals. This can be achieved by
painting the contact area or by incorporating a

Ancon CombiDeck
Ancon CombiDeck has been developed for
use with the permanent metal deck shuttering of
steel framed structures. CombiDeck edge support
is supplied with an integral channel section
that accepts standard Ancon ‘T’ Head Bolts.
The complete assembly can be manufactured in
stainless steel for applications where a long corrosion
free life and full compatibility with the stainless steel
support system is a requirement.
For applications where corrosion resistance is
not as critical, CombiDeck is available in zinc coated
mild steel with a stainless steel channel. Where there
is direct contact between stainless steel and carbon
steel, a coat of bitumen-based paint should be
applied. This will help prevent bi-metallic corrosion of
the carbon steel.
Ancon CombiDeck is manufactured in standard
three metre lengths in a variety of heights to suit the MDC Support System Brackets Bolted to CombiDeck and a Corner Column

floor thickness. Corner assemblies and special units

are available to suit particular applications.
The stainless steel channel welded into the edge
support will usually be Ancon 30/20, positioned
55mm below the top. Ancon 38/17 Channel is
sometimes used, or 28/15 where loadings are small.
The thickness of the floor slab will determine
the capacity of the support system. A 130mm thick
slab will limit the height of single skin brickwork to
4 metres. Thicker slabs may permit more masonry
to be supported, but this is unlikely to be in excess of
6 metres.

Design Variations
Most Ancon Support Systems can be used with
CombiDeck. Welded CombiDeck corner units are
available for external corners, but it is generally
easier to fix the MDC bracket directly to the corner Corner Detail Showing Fixing Straps Between CombiDeck and Metal

Adjustment
The adjustment provided by Ancon CombiDeck
is identical to Ancon MDC when used with cast-in
channels. The serrated and slotted face of the
bracket allows a total vertical adjustment of up to
60mm. The built-in channel will provide virtually
unlimited horizontal adjustment. Shims can be
included between the bracket and the frame up to a
maximum thickness of the outside diameter of the
fixing bolt or 16mm, whichever is less. As an
alternative, Ancon Extension Plates can be used to
increase the bearing for the brickwork. See page 11.

Details for Specification and Ordering
Ancon MDC Systems are tailored to suit each
project, based on the cavity size at the support and
the masonry load to be supported. Ancon will design
an economical configuration of channel, bracket
and angle.
For applications using CombiDeck the
specification is as follows:-

MDC / CD / type / cavity / masonry load

e.g. MDC / CD / R / 75 / 5.6
Ancon will design a system to fix to CombiDeck

e.g. CombiDeck / 30 / 140
125mm
This will have a 30/20 channel and will suit a floor min

Fixing CombiDeck to Steelwork

The standard edge trim used with metal deck
permanent shuttering is designed to retain the wet
concrete during construction of the floor. Ancon
CombiDeck also has to support the external 100mm Prop
brickwork. It is therefore very important that the max

outside edge of the CombiDeck remains vertical. The

125mm
installation procedure, reinforcement requirement
min
and allowable overhang may be different to those of
the edge trim which CombiDeck replaces.
The bottom of the CombiDeck should be fixed to
the top of the steelwork at 225mm maximum centres.
Fixing straps are supplied to restrain the top
edge of the CombiDeck. These will be positioned
100mm Prop
within 100mm of each butt joint and at centres not max
exceeding 450mm. The straps are supplied in
Maximum Overhang of CombiDeck
2 metre lengths for cutting and bending on site.
The outer edge of the CombiDeck can extend
beyond the steelwork up to a maximum distance of
100mm. If a greater distance is required, both the
metal deck and the CombiDeck will need to be
propped.
A minimum of 125mm should be left between the
outer edge of the CombiDeck and the metal deck to
allow sufficient space for the channel anchors and
the local reinforcement. Where the decking is at 90˚
to the CombiDeck, the open troughs must be filled to
retain the wet concrete. The butt joints between
lengths of CombiDeck should be taped to prevent
concrete leakage. Typical Details of Fixing Strap Connections

ANCON CFA CONTINUOUS ANGLE

SUPPORT SYSTEM

Ancon CFA Systems can carry over 8 metres of

brickwork and accommodate various cavity widths.
For many applications, particularly where large
cavities are involved, the Ancon MDC Support
System may prove to be a more economical solution.
Continuous angles are more suitable for applications
where cavities are small or there is a requirement for
the cavity to be closed at the support position. The
angles are cold formed and will normally be supplied
in lengths of up to 4 metres.

Design Variations
In addition to variations in angle size and
thickness, an inverted version, the CFA/I, has the CFA Fixed to AnconLock Toothed Channel
support leg at the top and the fixing slots positioned
closer to the corner of the angle.

Concrete Frames
Horizontal slots in the vertical leg allow fixing to
AnconLock Toothed Channels cast into the concrete
edge. Ancon Expansion Bolts can be used as an
alternative to cast-in fixings. For further information
see page 38.

Steel Frames
Ancon CFA Support Systems can be fixed
directly to uncased structural steel frames. Universal
beams will require an angle to be welded between
the flanges at each bracket position. Horizontal
slots should always be provided in the steel edge
beam to allow lateral tolerance. The angle will have
vertical slots with a serrated pad welded to the front
face of the vertical leg of the angle.
The structural edge member must be designed
to minimise deflections and accommodate the CFA Fixed to Structural Steel Edge Beam
torsional forces created by the eccentric load from
the brickwork, if excessive movement of the support
system is to be avoided.

Fabricated Angles
Many features will need special design attention,
especially if double skin brickwork is to be Continuous angle
supported. Fabricated angles with stiffeners, used in
conjunction with the Ancon MDC System for adjacent
single skin brickwork, is often the best solution.

Curved Angles
Curved angles can be supplied for arches or Adjustment of CFA System
other applications. These can be problematic to
produce accurately due to the distortion of cold
formed members during the bending process.
Although every endeavour is made to achieve the
required curve, our normal tolerances are not
applicable for these angles.

ANCON INDIVIDUAL BRACKET

SUPPORT SYSTEM

Three versions of the Ancon Individual Bracket

Support System are available, MDB, LDB and AMK.
MDB brackets at 225mm centres will carry 8 metres
of brickwork and LDB brackets will carry 4 metres.
This capacity will reduce when they are used at
450mm centres to support blockwork. AMK brackets
have individual working loads of 3.5, 7.0 and 10.5kN.
The system comprises individual brackets
positioned at each perpend, bolted back to a
continuous channel cast into the edge of the
concrete. The 4mm thick support plate of the
standard bracket can be accommodated within
a 10mm bed joint. LDA and MDA angle support
Arch Support with LDB/IS
brackets will generally be required at vertical
movement joints and corners. These brackets have
thicknesses of 6mm and 8mm respectively.

Design Variations
The main application for individual brackets is for
the support of soldier courses from above, and for
the support of non-structural arched brickwork. Both
these applications involve individual brackets at
225mm centres that have stirrups welded to the
underside. Stitching rods span the stirrups and
Soffit Support using LDB/S and Soffit Angle
support the three bricks between the brackets.
The use of LDB/S brackets with the stiffener
below the support plate provides greater freedom for
the brickwork above.
Ancon Soffit Angles are used in conjunction with
LDB/S brackets to extend the support of soffit
brickwork. These are usually spaced at 225mm
centres and fixed to Ancon 28/15 Cast-in Channel.

Curved Brickwork
Ancon LDBs and MDBs are ideal for supporting
brickwork that is curved on plan. The 28/15, 30/20 or
38/17 channel is supplied curved to suit the radius of
the concrete. The standard brackets can then be
fixed to the cast-in channel.

Corbelled Brickwork
Individual brackets can be used to support
brickwork at the top of the corbel. Ancon SC28
Corbel Ties restrain the corbelled brickwork to 28/15
channel cast into the sloping face of the concrete.

STONEWORK SUPPORT

Stone cladding is often a combination of large

individually sized stones. These can sometimes vary
in thickness and may include cornice or other stones
that stand out from the general line of the cladding.
Support for the stonework will usually be positioned
over the horizontal movement joint at each floor level
and over openings.

Britannic Assurance, Wythall

The most efficient method is for individual

supports to be positioned at the vertical joint
between two adjacent stones. As an alternative, two
smaller supports can be located near each end of
each stone. The support of cornice and other
particularly large stones will need special attention.

Design Considerations
The design of stone cladding should be in
accordance with BS 8298 : 1994 Code of practice Individual MDC/SD Stonework Support Bracket
for the design and installation of natural stone
cladding and lining.
SA3
The minimum bearing at the support is generally
50% of the width of the stone. A single support
carrying two stones should be at least 75mm long.
Where individual supports are used, these should be
at least 50mm long.

ANCON MDC/S STONEWORK SUPPORTS

Ancon MDC/S Stonework Supports are based on

the MDC masonry support system. The bracket
height and depth are varied to suit the cavity size and
the loadings. The dimensions of the angle are
selected to suit the stonework to be supported.

Design Variations
The MDC/S Stonework Support can be supplied
in a variety of configurations to suit the particular
application.
Individual MDC/SD Stonework Support Bracket
Ancon MDC/SD has a dowel to restrain the base
of each stone, MDC/SC has the bottom leg of the

support has to be positioned above the base of the
stone.

Adjustment
The serrated and slotted face of the MDC/S
bracket allows a total vertical adjustment of up to
60mm. Cast-in channel will provide horizontal Shim
adjustment, but because fixing positions can be
difficult to predetermine, expansion bolts are often MDC/S

used. Shims can be included between the bracket

and the frame up to a maximum thickness of the
outside diameter of the fixing bolt, or 16mm,
whichever is less.

Ancon WP2 Windposts are angle section
windposts designed for either small cavities or where
wind loads are high. One leg of the angle windpost is
built into the blockwork, and the blockwork tied
through the leg of the windpost to minimise any
possible movement or cracking of internal finishes.
If a vertical movement joint is required in place of a
tied joint, ties with a plain end on one side can be
supplied.

Windpost Design
Ancon Windposts are designed to span
vertically between floors to provide lateral support for
panels of brickwork. The windposts will usually be
restrained by the brickwork and designed as ‘simply
supported beams’.
Deflection under wind load will often limit the
maximum loading. Windposts can be designed as
‘propped cantilevers’ to limit deflection, this however
will require a much larger base connection which in
many cases may be difficult to accommodate.
Connections to the frame are designed to permit WP1/WP3 WP2 Windposts
adjustment during installation. Serrated surfaces will Windposts will will usually have
usually have Ties at 225mm
be provided where adjustment is in the direction of Ties at 450mm Vertical Centres

vertical movement of the frame to take place.

The type of fixing will depend on the nature of the
frame. Expansion bolts or cast-in channels are
normally supplied for concrete frames and set
screws will be supplied for steel frames. The tables
on page 36 include part of our range of windposts.

Parapet and Spandrel Posts

Ancon Parapet and Spandrel Posts are
restrained by the brickwork and designed as
‘cantilevers’. The base connection will need to be
sufficient to resist the ‘bending moment’ and may in
some cases be difficult to accommodate within the
floor construction. The height of these posts is
unlikely to be more than 1.6 metres. The tables on
page 37 include part of our range of parapet and
spandrel posts. For further information or advice on

The choice of the type of fixing and its position
in the structure should be considered when the
windpost or parapet post has been selected. This is
particularly important when the post is to be fixed to
concrete. Expansion bolts are usually kept 100mm
from an edge and 150mm apart; closer edge
distance and spacing can be achieved with cast-in
channels. The bolt in the slotted connection at the top
should be positioned so that vertical movement of
the frame can take place. The details shown below
are typical. The slotted holes in the base plate can be
positioned diagonally to provide adjustment in two WP2 Windpost Bolted to the Top of WP3 Windpost Fixed Directly to the

A range of ties is available to suit Ancon
Windposts. SDN Ties are used to the outer leaf, SPN
Ties to the inner leaf and SNS Ties across the posts
in the inner blockwork. PNS Ties with debonding
sleeves can also be used in the inner blockwork
where there is a vertical joint. SPN
