Acadia National Park ●

Acadia National Park encompasses 47,000 acres
There are 26 mountains in the park
● It has a very diverse landscape with mountains, an ocean
shoreline, woods, and lakes
● 20% of the park is classified as wetlands; each wetland is
home to at least one rare plant
● Located in southern Florida and is more than 1.5 million acres in size
● It is a river; it’s constantly moving even though the water looks still
● It is the only place in the world that alligators and crocodiles coexist
● Largest designated wilderness in the eastern US

The Everglades
The Grand Canyon

● Located in Arizona
● The Grand Canyon is bigger than the state of Rhode Island
○ The grand canyon is over a mile deep, 277 miles long, and 18 miles wide
● It was formed over 6 million years ago
● Supai village is located in the Grand Canyon and is the most remote
community in the lower 48 states
● Located in California and is over 600 square miles
● First national park created to protect a living organism
○ Protect the Sequoia trees from logging
● Sequoias can live for up to 3,000 years
● There are over 80 caves under the park, Crystal Cave
being the largest
● Home to the tallest peak in the continental US, Mount
Whitney

● Arches National Park is located in Utah, bordered by the Colorado River and
it covers 120 square miles
● There are over 2000 natural sandstone arches
● 300 million years ago, Arches was covered by an inland sea. The sea left
behind salt beds which are now the arches
● The park contains the highest density of natural arches in the world
Yellowstone National Park

● Located mostly in Wyoming but it spreads into Montana and Idaho; it is about 3,500
square miles
● Yellowstone National Park was the first National Park ever created in 1872
● The park sits on top of an active supervolcano and is home to half of the world’s
known geysers
● Home to the largest herd of free roaming bison in the world
