Intercultural Communication
Intercultural refers to ‘derived from different cultures’, thus Intercultural Communication
refers to ‘communication between people of different cultures’. Today’s world is of global
market, and it has spanned natural boundaries and borders, making communication between
people with different linguistic cultural backgrounds as constructive as possible. In addition,
the domestic business market is focused on diverse workforce, with human resources having
different national, religious and ethnic backgrounds. With this environment, the organization
can benefit from a broad range of ideas, get better understanding of diverse markets, and
hire resources from large pool of talent. Contrarily, intercultural communication has brought
up challenges in many ways, like miscommunication due to cultural barrier, motivating human
resources to work collaboratively by understanding one another’s culture.
Culture is the traditions, beliefs, attitudes, and values, social and political relationships which
is shared by the system. A cultural being means embracing a cultural identity composed of
ethnicity, culture, gender, age, life stage, beliefs, values, and assumptions. Culture can be
learned by the advice from other members in the society and by understanding their
behaviors. Culture is ethnocentric. Ethnocentrism is a perceptual grid through which cultures
interpret and judge all other cultures. It is the feeling that "we are normal, we are right" and
others "are abnormal, not right" thing for any aspect of culture. Stereotyping is designating
an individual on the basis of their culture or social group without considering their unique
characteristics.
Culturally diverse people convey and depicts the message differently and often increases the
degree of misunderstanding. This degree of misunderstanding can be minimized by
