This journal article was written by Jeanne Brooks-Gunn and Greg J. Duncan and was published
by Princeton University. This journal article focuses on studies that focus on exploring
the relationship between poverty and child outcomes. This journal article is objectively
talking about poverty and its effects that it has on education and the devolvement of a
child. It being objectively talking about poverty there really isn’t any or as many biased
points as my other sources. There were many important points that the authors go into
depth about. “One being that family income appears more strongly related to children’s
ability and achievement than their emotional outcomes.” (Brooks) In other words,
poverty has more of an effect on a child’s ability to learn and complete their
achievements than their emotions which is something many people believe is all poverty
effects. Another point that the authors talked about is the timing of poverty and how it is
important for the outcome of the child. Children in poverty at a much younger age are
more like to drop out of school or not complete school than children that experienced
poverty in later years. This article was written by Jeanne Brooks-Gunn an American
written numerous books and published more than 500 articles, her work focuses on

poverty. Greg Duncan is also an author of this article and his current research projects
include an examination of how children’s early skills and behaviors relate their later life
outcome. With this being said the information is reliable and is supposed to allow people
to understand the relationship between poverty and children’s development. This article
has given me a better insight into the effects that poverty has on a child’s development.
This article was filled with research that helped me better understand poverty and its
effects and I was able to see the effects without seeing them. Even though this article was
written in 1997 it still has a lot of information that I will use in my project because of all
Slade, Sean. “Poverty Affects Education--And Our Systems Perpetuate It.” The Huffington Post,
affects-education_b_7861778.html.
It is a newspaper article that was published in the Huffington Post. This article goes into depth
about the effects that poverty has on education and how our systems perpetuate them.
The author's point of view is that poverty is something that is “affecting many aspects of
life like, education, the economy, and the future.”. He also believes that poverty “is
becoming the norm and we appear reluctant to address it” (Slade). Throughout the article,
Slade talked about many different topics and these are some that popped out the most. It
is been 51 years since the nation declared poverty unacceptable. The last time the nation
declared poverty unacceptable was when Lyndon B. Johnson was in office and he
launched the War on Poverty in 1964. Another important topic that Slade talked about
was how we have steps in place to change poverty, but we have not put them to use.
After he talked about this step he mentioned how there are also solutions that we can put

in place to fix the poverty cycle in the school systems. For example, he talked about
changing the formula by which we fund our schools and giving students in poverty the
counterparts. The information presented in this article is information that was given by
Sean Slade is the senior director of Global Outreach at ASCD a global leadership
organization and, has over 25 years of experience in education. He wrote an article in the
Huff Post about the effects that poverty has on education and he wanted to communicate
and put more emphasis on these effects because they are not emphasized or talked about
enough. This article has given me a better insight into the effects that poverty has on
education and some solutions to fix these effects. The solutions helped me better
understand the smaller problems under the big problem. I will use this source in my

This website only has information on poverty. Instead of having information on one specific
topic in poverty it has facts on different topics of poverty. For example, it has information
on poverty and empowerment and talks about how empowering kids has a big effect on
poverty. Giving kids confidence that can help them break free from poverty. Another
topic that the website is talking about is child poverty in the US. It talks about the states
with the highest rates of child poverty. It also talks about how the federal spending on
kids lowered and how the government only spends 10% of the national budget on kids.
The information on this website is cited and they have links to their sources. Based on

some of the sources that this website provided the information given is reliable. This
website is different from my other annotations because it has way more information on
poverty and it does not just focus on one main topic. I will use some of the information
given to me by this website. I mostly intend to use the statistics that they gave on poverty
in the US.
