INSTRUCTIONS TO CANDIDATES

Answer question 1 in section A plus three other questions from section B

SECTION A 40 MARKS

1. A suspension of Saccharomyces (yeast) cells was added to a dilute sucrose solution at

25oC. The mixture was gently agitated for 16 days and 10cm3 samples were
withdrawn each day and the number of organisms counted. On the fifth day a small
quantity of a culture of the ciliate Paramecium was added. The results of the
experiment are as shown in table 1.
No of organisms in 10cm3 samples
Days yeast Paramecium
1 20 0
2 84 0
3 224 0
4 264 0
5 266 30
6 224 150
7 114 168
8 154 76
9 222 72
10 218 138
11 120 162
12 84 96
13 180 54
14 178 90
15 120 144
16 60 120

h) State the properties of yeast that make it possible to survive in this relationship
(03 marks)
i) Relate the properties of yeast with their use in industry (02 marks)
j) State two other ecological factors that would normally affect yeast populations in
nature other than those investigated in this experiment
(02 marks)
