Project part 2

1. Determine the proportion of each color within the overall sample gathered by the class.
a. Guess! What do you expect the proportions to be? Why?

Red Total/ Proportion: 1600/ 27.1%

Orange Total/ Proportion: 1200/ 20.3%

Yellow: 1000/16.9%

GREEN: 900/15.3%

PURPLE: 1200/20.3%

Estimated Sample Size 5900

We would guess our proportion to be similar to our individual proportions but on a

much larger scale (x100) to account for the estimated class size.

b. Compute the proportions of Red, Orange, Yellow, Green and Purple candies in the class
data set.

Sample Size: 6680

Red Total/Proportion: 1340. 1340/6680 = 0.201 x 100 =20.1%
Orange Total/ Proportion: 1356. 1356/6680 = 0.203 x 100 = 20.3%
Yellow Total/ Proportion: 1410. 1410/6680 = 0.211 x 100 = 21.1%
Green Total/ Proportion: 1245. 1245/6680 = 0.186 x 100 = 18.6%
Purple Total/ Proportion: 1329. 1329/6680 = 0.199 x 100 = 19.9%
2. In Stat Crunch, create a pie chart and a Pareto Chart for the total number of candies of each
color in our class data set.
a. Pie Chart
b. Pareto Chart

3. Does the data represent a random sample? What would the population be? Collaborate to
discuss sampling and our data in a paragraph of two.

A random sample can be defined as the process of using chance to select individuals
from a population to be included in the sample. The data collected by Mr. Oremus' class was
done using random sampling. Each student selected a random bag of skittles, by chance,
without using any predetermined method of selection. The population of this study includes all
original skittles, and the sample includes the 6680 skittles collected by the investigating group.

We can agree it would not be feasible to count every Skittle in the population of original
skittles which is why random sampling and creating a subset of the population can be relied on
to give an accurate representation of color proportions. By further determining the color
proportions of the sample, we can then use this data to conduct studies related to the colors
available in skittles. With the results achieved in our study, we can determine that the
proportion of skittles are as follows: 20% red, 20% orange, 21% yellow, 19% green, and 20%
purple.
