Introduction
Ductile Iron and Cast Iron Gate Valves

Iron gate valves are available in two
basic types; non-rising stem Inside
Screw and rising stem Outside Screw
and Yoke type.
The inside screw type has the stem
actuating thread within the pressure
envelope and is non-rising.This type
of valve is usually used for non
corrosive and reasonably clean
services and has a smaller overall
height than the outside screw type.
The outside screw, rising stem type
has the stem actuating thread outside
the pressure envelope and can be
used on more active media where the
fluid might otherwise have an adverse
affect on the thread.
Valve bodies are made from
ductile iron or cast iron and have
integral flanges.
Seat rings are threaded and securely
fixed into the body.
Bonnets are made of ductile iron or
cast iron and those for outside screw
gate valves have a machined back
seating surface and contain the gland
packing chamber.
Sizes DN50 to DN100 have integral
wedge seat faces and are made of the
trim material but larger sizes have
facing rings inserted into cast
iron wedges.
Iron gate valves may be used at the
pressure/temperature parameters
shown on the individual data sheets.
However, it should be recognised that
at elevated temperatures above
120°C, difficulty in opening/closing
may occur. Refer to guidance in the
Installation, Operation and
Maintenance Instructions.
