Competence to develop:
The student characterizes the electromagnetic wave behavior on a
guide waved and identifies the electric parameters in a transmission
like, looking for define its efficient level in a specific application.

Topics to develop:
- Waveguides
- Electric parameters in transmission lines

Steps, phases of the learning strategy to develop

Step 4 – Analyze the waves behavior in guided mediums and radiation

The group will have to follow the next steps to accomplish the activity
goals.

Step 1: Make an academic research about the topics defined for this
unit.

Step 2: Answer the given questions using academic resources.

Step 3: Each member of the group has to select and solve one
problem.

Step 4: Solve the practical exercises in group, taking into account that
it is necessary to explain each value and step.

Step 5: Compile the group contributions from the collaborative forum

and ensure the accomplish of the rubric items.

Step 6: Deliver the work in the monitoring and evaluation

environment.

Activities to develop

Each student in the group has to answer the following

questions using academic references to support the research:

1. What is the practical implications associated to a line with only

reactive components or only resistive components?
2. In a practical transmission system. What is a good value for the
reflection coefficient and the VSWR? Explain.
3. What occurs with the voltage and current in a line with the
following conditions: line terminated in its characteristic
impedance, line terminated in a short and line terminated in an
open?
4. What is the voltage reflection coefficient and what is an ideal
value for a transmission system?
5. What is the effect of Lossy line on voltage and current waves?
6. In the Smith Chart identify a Z L=∝ , a Z L=0 , two resistive
loads and two complex loads. You have to assume the
characteristic impedance.

Choose one of the following problems, solve it and share the

solution in the forum. Perform a critical analysis on the group
members’ contributions and reply this in the forum.

1. A lossless transmission line has a characteristic impedance of

Z 0 =50 Ω and the load at the end of the line has an impedance
of Z L=35+ j 85 Ω . Using the Smith Chart, find:
a. Reflection coefficient Γ (magnitude and phase), and the
VSWR.
b. The input impedance if the line is 0.65 λ long.
c. The length of the line, necessary to make the input impedance
real and the value of the impedance in this point.

2. A transmission line has the following parameters:, L=4 mH /km ,

C=40 nF /km , G=1.5 μS /km and R=5 Ω/km . It has a
generator supplying 200 V rms at ω=3 x 103 rad /s and in series
with a resistance of 200 Ω . The load has an impedance of
200 Ω . Find the input voltage and current.

3. A 45 Ω lossless transmission line has a Z L=35− j70 Ω . If it is

200 m long and the wavelength is 25 m . Find and probe with
the smith chart:
a. Input impedance.
b. Reflection coefficient.
c. VSWR

4. A transmission line of length l=0.45 λ has an input impedance

Z i=35+ j 45 Ω . Using the Smith Chart, find the load impedance
if Z 0 =75 Ω.

5. A load Z L=35− j60 Ω is connected to a transmission line with

Z 0 =75 Ω . The line is l=0.45 λ . Find the input impedance and
at least two line lengths where the input impedance is real. Use
the Smith Chart to Solve the exercise.

In group solve the following practical exercise

Using the software Smith V4.0, found in the practice learning

environment, solve the next exercises and explain each step of the
simulation.

1. For the following input impedance and load impedance, find the
wavelength necessary to get a real input impedance.

a. Z L=45− j 60 Ω Z 0 =75 Ω.
b. Z L=25− j36 Ω Z 0 =45 Ω .
c. Z L=98− j 46 Ω Z 0 =35 Ω.
d. Z L=56− j29 Ω Z 0 =58 Ω.

Collaborative learning environment: In this

environment, there is a forum where the student is
going to share information with his/her fellow
classmates in order to understand the conceptual
bases in Electrodynamic and waves and to solve the
Environment proposed problems.

developmen Monitoring and evaluation environment: In this
t environment, the student will have to deliver the
collaborative activity, according to the course agenda.

Practical learning environment: In this

environment, the student will find information to
develop the proposed practical activities.
Products to Individual:
deliver by The student will have to answer the conceptual
student questions using academic sources, to solve a chosen
problem and to make a review in the forum about the
delivered problems.

Collaborative:
The collaborative group will have to choose the best
analyses about the given concepts and to consolidate
each part of the proposed activity, including the
practical exercises, where everyone has to participate.

The deliver document should contain the following:

- Cover page (It contains the title, authors’
name, course, university and date)
- Introduction (The group will explain the
practical application associate to the unit topics)
- Developed activity (according to the activity
guidelines)
- Conclusions
