The Elgar Concerto for Violoncello and Orchestra in
E minor, Opus 85, was completed in the summer of 1919. It is
one of the more important concertos in the cello literature
even though it is not performed very frequently.
Althouch much has been written of “lear himself, there
18 no detailed analysis of the cello concerto. An analysis of
@lgar's harmonic style has been made by Mary Dann in her thesis,
Harmonie Technique of Elcar. It is the purpose of this dis-
sertation to make a complete study and analysis of the concerto
mainly from the standpoint of the performer.
The introductory chapter is a brief setch of lvar's
life. Chapter II 1s an analysis of the concerto from four
points of view:
21) Form
2) Treatment of Thematic Material
Rhythm
4) Relation of the orchestra to the solo part
