Example 3
A rope is tied on a steel drum of lifting machine with a diameter
of 1.2 m, a mass of 25 kg and 0.18 m radius of gyration. A mass of
65 kg is tied to one end of the rope and the other end is tied with
a mass of 30 kg.
Determine:
a) the torque of driver needed to lift the 65 kg of mass
with 2.5 m/s² acceleration.
b) the linear velocity of mass with 2.5 m/s² acceleration
where the power produced by the drum is 1.4 kW.
c) the linear acceleration when the drum is freely
released

(Answer: a) T = 351.885 Nm , b) V = 2.3871 m/s , c) a = 3.58 m/s2)

Example 4
a) A drum of mass 400 kg and 1.5 m in diameter and a radius of gyration of 550
mm is used to raise a lift of mass of 1050 kg with an acceleration of 2.3 m/s2.
Calculate:
i) The string tension
ii) The driven torque
iii) The power required at an instant when the load has an upward velocity
of 1.8 m/s and an upward acceleration of 2.3 m/s2.

b) A load of mass 150 kg is lifted by means of a rope which wound several

times rounds drum and which then supports a balance mass of 80 kg. As the
load rises, the balance mass falls. The drum has a diameter of 1.2 m, a radius
of gyration 0f 480 mmm, and its mass is 70 kg. Calculate the driven torque
and also the power required at an instant when the load has an upward
velocity of 2.5 m/s and an upward acceleration of 1.2 m/s2.

(Answer: a) i) 12715.5 N ii) 9907.7 Nm iii) 23.778 kW b) 609.88 Nm, 2.54 kW)
Exercise 1
A rope was tied to a steel drum of lifting machine. The drum has a
diameter of 2.5 m, mass of 26 kg and 0.21 m radius of gyration. The
lifting machine is used to lift up the mass of 80 kg with an acceleration
of 2.5 m/s2. This load is balanced with a 30 kg balancing mass.
a) Sketch the free body diagram by referring the above statement
b) Calculate the tension of ropes
c) Calculate the torque drive to lift up the mass of 80 kg
d) Determine the linear velocity of mass when the power
produce from drum is 18 kW
e) Calculate the acceleration of the system when the drum is
freely released.

(Answer: b) P1 = 984.8 N, P2 = 219.3 N , c) T = 959.169 Nm, d) V = 23.5 m/s , e) a = 4.43 m/s2 )

Exercise 2
A hoisting machine has a drum with a diameter of 850 mm and a
mass of 10 kg. Mass 18 kg and 8 kg at each end of a rope tied on a
drum. Radius of gyration of the drum is 290 mm. Ignore friction
between the rope to the drum. Calculate:

a) acceleration system and the tension of the rope

when it move freely
b) torque drive if the mass of 18 kg will need to raise at
acceleration of 1.8 m/s2

(Answer : a = 3.2 m/s2 , T = 65.16 Nm)
