Title:

Elimination using Multiplication- Direct Lesson

Grade: 9th grade
Subject: Algebra 1
Duration: 1 class period

Learning Objective(s):
Students will be able to solve systems of equations by using elimination with
multiplication.

Essential Question:
How can we use elimination with multiplication to solve a system of equations?

Common Core State Standards:
A.REI.5
Prove that, given a system of two equations in two variables, replacing one equation by a
sum of that equation and a multiple of the other produces a system with the same
solutions.
A.REI.6
Solve systems of linear equations exactly and approximately (e.g., with graphs), focusing on
pairs of linear equations in two variables.

Mathematical Practices:
1. Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.
6. Attend to precision.

Materials:
Ø Notes page
Ø Dry erase markers
Ø Worksheets

Accommodations:
Ø There will be an alternate version of the worksheet so struggling students will be
able to have a worksheet that best suits their needs.
Ø There will be a partially filled in version of the notes for students that need it and
absent students.

Overview:
Ø Students will have a warm-up to complete at the beginning of class where they will
practice multiplying an entire equation by a number.
o They will have two equations and will be instructed to multiply them by both
positive and negative numbers.
Ø Warm up equations are:
o 3𝑏 − 4𝑧 = −3.4; 𝑚𝑢𝑙𝑡𝑖𝑝𝑙𝑦 𝑏𝑦 3
1 5 6
o − 𝑥 + 𝑦 = ; 𝑚𝑢𝑙𝑡𝑖𝑝𝑙𝑦 𝑏𝑦 − 4
2 2 7
Ø We will go over the warm up as a class. I will ask for two volunteers to present their
solutions to the class using the visualizer and walk the class through their thought
processes and ideas.
Ø After the warm up, I will put 2 different systems of equations on the whiteboard. I
will ask students if I wanted to get rid of one of the variables in the system, what
would I multiply one of the equations by?
Ø Equations are:
o
o
Ø I will ask 2 different students to come up to the board and explain and justify their
answers for both systems.
Ø Then I will lead into an introduction of the elimination method using multiplication.
Ø I will explain to students that eliminating one variable is exactly what we will do to
solve systems of equations using this method.
Ø I will walk them through one problem entirely to make sure they have seen how it is
done.
o 4𝑥 + 2𝑦 = 8
o 2𝑥 + 3𝑦 = 10
Ø I will then give each group a system of equations to solve by multiplication. Each
group will present their problem to the class and walk the class through their
thought processes.
o Equations are

Ø After each group presents, students will solve problems in the textbook that ask
students to use the elimination method with multiplication.
