SECTION – I
1.
a) What is the basis of selection of a hydraulic turbine? 2M
b) Compare otto, diesel and dual cycles for the same compression ratio. 2M
c) Differentiate open loop and closed loop gas turbines? 2M
d) Differentiate between two stoke and four stroke engines. 2M
e) Define slip percentage slip and negative slip. 2M

SECTION – II

2. a) What is a draft tube ? What are its functions? 7M

b) A nozzle of 60 mm diameter delivers a stream of water at 30 m/s perpendicular to a plate that


moves away from the jet at 5 m/s. Find (i) the force of the plate (ii) work done and efficiency
of jet 8M

3. a) Define the specific speed of a turbine ? What is the significance of the specific speed. Derive
an expression for the specific speed. 7M

b) A pelton wheel is to be designed for the following specifications: Shaft power = 12kW, head
= 400 m, speed = 750 rpm, overall efficiency = 85% coefficient of velocity = 0.98, speed ratio
= 0.4, jet diameter is not to exceed one-sixth of the wheel diameter. Determine the wheel
diameter, diameter of the jet and numbers jets required. 8M

4.a) Explain briefly about otto cycle with the help of P-V and T-S diagrams and derive an
expression for the ideal efficiency of otto cycle. 7M

b) In Rankine cycle superheated steam enters the turbine at 100 bar and 500 0C . The condenser
pressure is 0.1 bar. The net power output of the cycle is 150 MW. If the turbine and pump
have isentropic efficiencies of 85 % and 75 % respectively. Determine the thermal efficiency
and the mass flow rate of steam. 8M

5. a) Differentiate between petrol and diesel engine. 7M

b) A four cylinder two stroke cycle petrol engine develops 23.5 kW brake power at 2500 rpm.
The mean effective pressure on each piston is 8.5 bar and the mechanical efficiency is 85%.
Calculate the diameter and stroke of each cylinder, assuming the length of stroke equal to 1.5
times the diameter of the cylinder. 8M

6.a) Derive the expression for maximum blade efficiency in a single stage impulse turbine.

b) A single row impulse turbine develops 132.4 KW at a blade speed of 175 m/s, using 2 kg of
steam per sec. Steam leaves the nozzle at 400 m/s. Velocity coefficient of the blades is 0.9.
Steam leaves the turbine blades axially. Determine nozzle angle, blade angles at entry and
exit, assuming no shock. 8M

7. a) Explain the working principle of open cycle gas turbine with diagram. 7M

b) In a Gas turbine plant air enters the compressor at a pressure 1 bar and 27 0C . The pressure
ratio is 6 . Calculate the maximum temperature in the cycle and the power developed by the

turbine. Assume turbine work is 2.2 times the compressor work. Take 8M

8. a) Differentiate between centrifugal pumps and reciprocating pumps. 7M

b) A single acting reciprocating pump, running at 50 rpm delivers 0.01 m3/s of water. The
diameter of the piston is 200mm and stroke length 400 mm. Determine i) the theoretical
discharge of the pump, (ii) co-efficient of discharge, and (iii) slip and the percentage slip of
the pump. 8M

9. a) Explain the working of a single stage centrifugal pump with neat sketches. 7M

b) A centrifugal pump delivers water against a net head of 14.5 metres and a design speed of
1000 rpm. The vanes are curved back to an angle of 30 0 with periphery. The impeller
diameter is 300 mm and outlet width is 50mm. Determine the discharge of the pump if
manometric efficiency is 95%. 8M
