Common Core State Standards:
PO 1 Analyze the implications of scarcity
• limited resources and unlimited human wants influence choice at individual, national, and
international levels
Objective (Explicit):
• TSW have an understanding of the concept of scarcity
• TSW have an understanding of modern day applications of scarcity
• TSW relate scarcity to their personal lives
Evidence of Mastery (Measurable):
¨ Text responses
¨ Activity participation
Students will respond to 2 online questions through their cellphones
• What are some examples of limited resources?
• Your absolute favorite artist is performing in your city. You can either go to the concert and meet them, or
study for a very important final that you have the next day. Which do you choose?
Students will participate in an activity (described further on) where they individually simulate making choices while
considering the scarcity of the items.
Sub-objectives, SWBAT (Sequenced from basic to complex):
¨ How will you review past learning and make connections to previous lessons?
¨ What skills and content are needed to ultimately master this lesson objective?
¨ How is this objective relevant to students, their lives, and/or the real world?
SWBAT identify scarcity in their lives
SWBAT understand how choices are made
SWBAT apply their new knowledge to discover what affects choices
Key vocabulary: Scarcity, Opportunity cost Materials: laptop, presentation, paper, marker, cut outs
of resources, dice, cellphone
Opening (state objectives, connect to previous learning, and make relevant to real life)
¨ How will you activate student interest?
¨ How will you connect to past learning?
¨ How will you present the objective in an engaging and student-friendly way?
¨ How will you communicate its importance and make the content relevant to your students?
We will begin by doing a word cloud of examples of limited resources. Students will text in their
responses, they will show up on the laptop, and as a class we will discuss the submitted ideas
and their frequency in the word cloud.

Co-Teaching Strategy

The presentation is designed with an interactive portion to keep all students engaged as well as aid
students who are more visual learners.

Closing/Student Reflection/Real-life connections:
¨ How will students summarize and state the significance of what they learned?
¨ Why will students be engaged?
After the activity, students will share who their person was and why they chose the items they did. They will then
have a better understanding on the factors like scarcity and personal characteristics that influence our choices.

Reflection:

I was very happy with how responsive my “students” were. They always answered my questions and even
discussed with each other, not just me, about the topic at hand. A memorable moment was when I saw Tayler realize the
purpose of the activity midway through. She exclaimed “But then they won’t have any!!” and I said “Yes, that’s scarcity.”
And it totally clicked for her what the exercise meant. I would do the activities and forms of technology integration again
because I think they really enjoyed them, what I would change is how in depth I went in my presentation, I feel like I could
have covered a little more material more in depth.
